Dining out

I went to Wong's in Ranelagh for dinner for my dad's birthday last night. I wasn't impressed. To be honest, it was no better than a run-of-the-mill Chinese takeaway. We ordered a set menu for €38 per person (we were five), plus wine on top of that. Now, for that price, the food should have been very good.

Instead, it was soggy, gluey and mediocre. Our range of meat dishes ran the gamut from garlic prawns (in a sickeningly gloopy 'garlic butter sauce') to beef, taking in pork (decent) and chicken (absolutely horrendous - completely translucent and with no discernible texture) along the way. The shredded duck starter was fine, however, but, really, it's hard to fuck that one up.

Dessert and coffee were included in the set menu price. The only options for the former were banana fritters (a joke) and plain ice cream (what can I say?).

The bill for this deeply disappointing ragbag of dishes? €280. A complete disgrace. And probably even more annoying than that was the fact that the (charmless) waitresses kept refilling our wine glasses literally every few minutes, and then asking us if we wanted another bottle. I despise this money making ploy in restaurants.

I'll never set foot in Wong's (which is a Dublin-wide chain, by the way) again. Ever.
