Namaah's Curse, Book 2 of Namaah's Legacy

Jul 02, 2010 14:55

So, being back from all my travels, all my vacations and events, the first thing I accomplished was sitting down and reading Namaah's Curse between sleeping and going to work. Well worth it, but I do love Kushiel's Legacy so much more. I'm not sure Jacqueline Carey is going to trump that series, but I'll cross my fingers.

Thoughts and rambles and lots of spoilers behind the cut. )

I'm definitely under the impression that you'd be able to skip straight to the third book. A lot of what happened in this one didn't seem to promote what I think is going to happen in the third (unfinished business with Raphael). In Kushiel, Melisande was the underlying villain throughout. In the second trilogy, it was Imriel's character theme that built up to the great plot of Kushiel's Mercy.

Bleh, I'm definitely disappointed in this series, but I still find it enjoyable. Sorta. I'm all about Jehanne, especially since she's going to be playing a bigger role in the third book than this one (which was pretty much nothing until the end), but it's definitely not living up to Kushiel. Then again, what can you do against a series that celebrates S&M the way it does?

That. Everything you just said. But yeah, I'd wait until it hits paperback and I've got my 40% off coupon in hand. ;)

I tend to multiship Phèdre, but Melisande owns my heart through and through.

Namaah's Blessing looks like it'll be better since it's plot is winding back to Raphael. I think that has more continuity with the story that originally played out, so I'm glad it's going back there. I just hope Jehanne's presence is more than just a role to defeat Raphael. I love her so.

Absolutely, the story is finally going back to Terre d'Ange. As much as i liked the explorative travels to Ch'in, Tartar country and Bahktipur always wanted Moirin to get back ... Jehanne once again.
Sure hope she won t be there solely to help fight Raphael. It would be such a waste and so dissapointing. We shall see.

Wondering if there will be a bigger time jump, in other words how old would Désirée be by then ?

I'm definitely rooting for Jehanne the entire way. I think by the time Moirin gets back, Désirée will be at least a couple of years old? Maybe three or four depending on how long it takes for them to get back to Terre D'Ange.

Hi, just a random stranger popping in here. I literally just finished reading the book, and I was absolutely gutted by Jehanne's death. While I like Bao (who reminds me of a mix of Hyacinthe's Prince of Travelers, and Joscelin's Cassiline discipline), I'm very, very glad that Jehanne seems like she'll be reappearing in the third book.

And I really, really wish that Carey would just once let one of her strong, amazing, delicious female characters end up in a long-term relationship with another delicious female. Sigh. One can dream.

Anyway, excuse the random comment, but I just really needed to get it off my chest. Oh Jehanne! T_T

Hello, stranger!

I like Bao too, I do, but the romance between Moirin/Bao never really reached the epic levels that her previous couples did (at least in my opinion). Jehanne though... she makes me swoon like Melisande and Sidonie make me swoon. They're my trifecta of amazing.

Have you read Carey's Santa Olivia? The girl gets the girl in that one. ;) Shorter, not quite an epic like Kushiel's Legacy, but good in it's own right. I don't want to spoil anything but Loup, the main character, is soooooo delicious.

I think I read the first chapter of Santa Olivia, and I'm not sure how I feel about the setting. Maybe the first chapter was misleading. I'll give it another shot. Is it still as sexy as the Kushiel series?

No love for Nicola??? I totally have a character crush on her too. Although yes, that trifecta of amazing is quite amazing. Sidonei was a totally unexpected revelation to me.

For Santa Olivia, I had to warm up to the setting myself. I didn't really know where it was going, and it was so different than the sword-and-sorcery setting that I did tread lightly. In my head, I've totally casted Maggie Q as Loup, so that made it a lot easier to read. ;) It's not nearly as sexy as Kushiel, but it has its moments.

Hehehe, I got the feeling Sidonie was going to be fiesty, and how dare I forget Nicola! I suppose it's a Quartet now.
