Since I've been actively trying to avoid talking about my real problems, I'm going to talk about some really trivial problems. That is of course, ill-conceived movie remakes. Obviously.
I vaguely knew they were remaking The Karate Kid. I've never actually seen the first one, so I don't feel outraged about them remaking a classic. However, my main issue is that the movie is called The Karate Kid. The Mr. Miyagi character, Mr. Han, is played by Jackie Chan. He's Chinese. He doesn't do karate. He does kung fu. The vast majority of the audience probably wouldn't notice the different between the two, myself definitely included in that category, but even in the fucking trailer all they talk about is kung fu. Ok, yeah, you want to keep the name of the original film. I understand that. But this is just a little ridiculous. Judging by the trailer, I doubt the word 'karate' is ever uttered. Because they're too busy doing kung fu.
Also, it has come to my attention that they are remaking Death at a Funeral. I know that here in America we have this really charming habit of remaking foreign films because very few Americans will watch foreign films or read subtitles. Apparently. The problem here is that Death at a Funeral is a British film. Holy crap, it's in English, people! With American actors in it! And it was released in American theatres when it came out three years ago! I saw it with my sister! So anyway, why are they remaking it? I guess the original wasn't edgy enough, because this one is cast mostly with black people. Not that I have a problem with that in and of itself. I'm just confused about what they're attempting to do here. The cast does look pretty good; it's got some talented and well-known actors in it. But remaking this movie is totally pointless. The first one was terrific. I don't know if this plot is going to be well-suited to an American movie. I think it could easily just get overly slap-sticky (not that the original didn't have a lot of visual slapstick humor) and lose a lot of its wit. Hollywood, I am annoyed.
