I just. Generally tell people that this is the furry fandom and not the professional art industry; if they want to earn ~*real world*~ fees, then they should probably step away from their niche and dive into the professional industry.
I hate to be rather blunt about it[or maybe I'm just tired of people complaining about this subject to me], but a lot of these people wouldn't make even a fraction of what they would want to ideally, in the real world. They're niche artists; this is the furry fandom; they're catering to a specific audience rather than an ambiguous one which will have varying demands from one customer to another. I mean. One way of looking at it is that I can pay a professional artist $1500 and know that they will be able to pretty much draw whatever I want them to, or I can pay a niche artist $1500 and know that I can only get an image of a specific genre or subject. The former, at least in my opinion, is worth the price far more than the latter.
That being said, I do also think that a certain amount of people demand for ridiculously low rates for niche art. People need to keep in mind that artists, even if they're niche artists, are not slaves and should be paid fairly for their art. There needs to be a happy medium and an understanding that just because a versatile, industry artist can make a lot of money per image, doesn't mean that a closed-off, niche artist can expect to make the exact same amount of money. Why would I pay $50 for a fixed blade knife when I can pay $50 for a folding Swiss Army knife, complete with saw, magnifying glass, and corkscrew?
