The Stuff of Legend. DW, Doctor/Rose AU myth, Part 1/???
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
It is said that long ago, the Sun and the Earth’s Moon fell so deeply in love, they couldn’t bear to be parted for even a moment. With minds tangled and heavenly bodies pressed tight, they watched over the little blue planet as she twirled endlessly between them. Her tides kept time with the push-pull force of them, and the whole world felt the press of their gravity like a kiss.
Where did you come from? The Sun murmured as his mind curled contentedly around hers. He already knew the answer, of course, but he loved to listen to the Moon tell stories - theirs, especially.
I’ve always been here - older than you, even, she began. Her smile was a shimmering nudge against his consciousness as she twined her thoughts with his and held him, so close.
Cradle snatcher, he teased, tugging at their connection.
Pretend you don't love it, she pushed back with a snicker, giving as good as she got.
And so the mighty Sun, who ruled the heavens like a god and was a lord over Time, allowed himself to be pulled into the diminutive Moon’s orbit, never wanting to be anywhere other than near her. His mind and heart lay bare, the Sun asked the Moon another question, more softly than the first:
How long are you gonna stay with me?
The sound of her voice, thick with love, reached for him like an outstretched hand.
Together, life was never dull.
They wiled away the time inventing epic tall tales to explain things like why Red Giants magic into White Dwarves, and sent themselves into hysterical fits plotting ways to slip the Tarantula Nebula down the backs of The Seven Sisters. The Moon asked the Sun clever questions about what lay beyond the borders of their Solar System: questions that inevitably required two, three or even ten-part answers, which of course were the Sun’s very favorite sort. In the quiet moments, when nothing needed to be said, they marveled together at the majesty of infinite space slowly shaping and reshaping itself like a great kaleidoscope, always only just for them.
So consumed were they with the adventure and pleasure of each other’s company, the Sun and Moon didn’t realize that, from somewhere in the dark, they were getting noticed, too.
You will doom yourself, the other stars whispered to the Sun, blinking out their warning. One should never fall in love with moonlight. Better to stay like us - apart.
The Sun laughed, but the sound was brittle, like the snap and crunch of bone. ‘Apart.’ What you really mean is alone.
The Sun knew what it meant to be alone. Before, he had tried governing his corner of the heavens ‘Above and Apart,’ the way the Universe preferred to run things. Best to avoid attachments, the Universe had hissed softly in the Sun’s ear while he beat upon his drum, setting the rhythm for all the Cosmos and demanding the Sun, his reluctant foot soldier, march in step.
The instruction had blended with the drumbeat to become a mantra and, eventually, the code by which the Sun had existed. For a billion years, the Sun had almost been able to convince himself that it was enough to feel the turn of worlds, and to bear the knowledge of all that is, was and ever could be.
When the Sun thought there was nothing left in the galaxy that could surprise him, there she had been: round as a pearl and sewn to the sky, the Moon knitted the Sun’s heart to her own. She was the burning tip of a torch. A spotlight. Shining small and bright and fierce, she radiated his brilliance and love back to him tenfold, dazzling the Once and Future Dazzler.
While the great planets orbiting the Sun trembled under his gaze, the Moon just looked at him like he was hers.
