Wimsey on DVD: An Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club

A different Bunter from Clouds of Witness--Derek Newark, whom I rather liked. He and Peter have a wonderful scene as they prepare to begin questioning the denizens of the Bellona Club about the General's death; Newark manages to look quite offended when Ian Carmichael tells him he's too tidy to be a journalist, a comment that's borne out later on ( Read more... )

Also, a poppy in the lapel becomes an important plot point, a poppy which does not exist in the novel.

?

If that's General Fentiman's poppy, it does exist in the novel and is an important plot point.

If it's somebody else's poppy, then I have no idea what's going on. *g*

Oops! I had the book out while I was watching, but I must have missed it. I kept thinking, damn, that poppy thing was clever--I'd forgotten they added that in.

heh. I've been listening to Ian Carmichael reading this on tape for the past few days commute. (Sadly got to the end of side 10 this morning and realised I'd lost the last tape so no revelations for me today. Grrrr.)

Phyllida Law. Lovely. I am so fond of Marjorie Phelps. This is one of my favourites for the Parker/Wimsey interaction. How was that in the film version?

Pretty good, though not as much fun, IMHO, as MURDER MUST ADVERTISE. There's one amusing scene in which Parker eats Peter's breakfast (I assume to escape having another set for Great Ormond Street, which is how the book did it). Also, there's a long scene between the two of them when Peter is wearing a simply gorgeous dressing gown with big skirts and turned back cuffs and some wild pattern all over it.

Phyllida Law = Emma Thompson's mum, right?

Yes, and a fine actress whom I love. And Sophie's mum, too!
