I have a question for those here. Well, maybe a few actually ( Read more... )

Not all of those people would want to be identified as a human.

That is also true. I admit, I have met far from everyone and only know what I read on the journals. I'm amazed at all the different sorts of creatures here.

I find it surprising too.

Is your world like mine then? In my world there are humans and elves and then also monsters and godlike creatures called Sinistrals.

Where I come from, humans are a scientific classification. Homo sapiens. There are other sentient races with their own distinct species, and genetic lineage.

Here, I'd say it depends on how people classify themselves. I wouldn't try to impose the system from my universe on a being from another universe entirely, unless they wanted me to.

Your universe? That must be one very large world indeed then.

What are these other sentient races like?

We've explored about 8% of our own galaxy. It's very large indeed.

Their diversity is too great for me to be able to describe them with any accuracy. Where I come from, humanity is in contact with numerous other species, all of which have their own histories, languages, and cultures. Biologically, we are also all quite different, although some species bear more resemblance to humanity than others.

That is indeed a large world! Most I'm hearing about have a few species at most.

But from what you say, it seems a common trait is that they have some sort of society with a history, a language and culture. Maybe that is a part of what makes us different from other creatures.

Many of those questions are a matter of opinion. I doubt Iris-chan will get a concrete answer.

Even opinions help. I know there is definitely some set of things that is expected of people here, but what they are is a mystery.

I doubt the word "human" really applies here then. You don't need to be human to make stupid choices or vice versa.

[pauses] Iris-chan is very... interested in this subject, I've noticed.

My world is unusual it seems.

A human is judged by their actions, as any other creature is. But there's a point when a man can nae be called human anymore. Or rather, it would be convenient were it so, then ye could be excused from those who commit the atrocities against their own kind.

So you think that actions rather than appearance is all that matters?

Reply

rideircc January 22 2010, 20:56:34 UTC
Only in a perfect world, lass. People, human or no, tend to judge only by appearance.

Oh, I do know this. People like to judge quickly and will take you for your word until proven otherwise.

Not all humans are smart, though... I don't think that's a good way of deciding who's human.

I agree there is a various level of intelligence, and animals and monsters are capable of intelligence also, it may not be in ways we understand though.

What does that mean for the monsters, though? If they're as smart as humans, what makes them monsters?

The monsters in my world aren't that intelligent, but the do have some intelligence. They can choose to help a human or attack it for instance. And then there are basic instincts and all.
