Rachel Dawes was not a stupid woman, and after her first year as the youngest District Attorney in Gotham she couldn't hold onto her hope any longer.  It hadn't been very long since the lost son of Gotham, Bruce Wayne, had risen from the dead and brought with him (intentionally or not) disaster and destruction...but sometimes it seemed like forever.

She'd stood on the roof of a nameless Narrows building and watched as Bruce - no, the Batman - flew away from her wearing that ridiculous costume.  Something had felt final about the way he turned away from her and it wasn't until much later that she truly appreciated the gesture.

Gordon told her about the Joker and about his misgivings of having someone like the Batman lurking around the city.  At the time she had loudly disagreed with his assessment, pointing out that if the vigilante hadn't intervened, Ra's Al Ghul would have succeeded with his planned mass genocide.  Secretly, though, especially after another innocent soul was lost in the war the Joker had waged against the caped crusader, Rachel wondered if Jim was onto something.

As more and more super-villains popped up, salivating at the thought of taking down Gotham's greatest anti-hero, her face set into a grim line that never eased.  Some part of her knew that the wackos would have found another trigger had Bruce never looked at a cowl, but a growing part of her was resenting the hell out of him anyway.

She'd told Bruce (her greatest - and maybe only - love) that she would wait for a time when he could return to her.  But Rachel Dawes was not a stupid woman and she could see that that future would never come.

Some part of her would always be waiting, and Bruce knew that.
