3 Days Out

Feb 08, 2014 01:00

Ice storm took our power for 600,000 people in our area. And this time, I wasn't one of them. Yay.

But, our tree dropped a couple big branches, wiped out my fence and took out my cable line. Cable company came out and got us hooked back up in less than 24hrs BUT another tree took it out 1/2 hour later. And we were without tv, phone or internet for 3 days. With a kid home from school. And bored. Boo.

So, my kid actually spent time with me those 3 days. She watched Black Butler with me. She wants a demon butler. Too bad... I told her to get in line. She moved on to Saiyuki. She loves the monkey. And yes, I'm fully aware of the language. I've concluded that the language is no worse than her father on a rant.  Took the opportunity to get her three more books - she tore through the Percy Jackson series she got for xmas so she moved onto the graphic novels.  She is reading a new Spirit Animals series and is continuing some new Dragon series. When I was a kid it was all Judy Bloom and Nancy Drew. If I had dragon, spirit animal, modern demigod books I probably would have read more too. Even more puzzling, my dad was a sci-fi addict and other than Dragonriders of Pern, never really encouraged me much further. I picked up his copy of Dune at some point in my early teens - 12yo maybe. I can remember it so clearly... he rolled his eyes and told me I'd never finish it. I have no clue if he meant the subject matter would lose me or if it was too big... or maybe the words were too grown up... Whatever. I tore through it in a week. Why would any parent do that? So, my kid gets the exact opposite, of course.

Boring update is boring. But, that's where I've been.
