1. Sight
Ishida is a strange mish-mash of physical characteristics.
He’s tall but skinny, all arms and legs. It’s easy to miss him in a crowd because of his build; and his dark hair doesn’t make it any easier to tell him apart from the million other people roaming around on the streets. His face is as weird as his body. His facial features border on delicate, a bit like a girl’s, but the strong shape of the jaw is that of a man’s. Most people would probably say Ishida has catching eyes-too bad they’re always hidden behind those dorky glasses of his.
But, somehow, Renji thinks that all these seemingly incompatible elements meld together just fine, making Ishida very easy on the eyes.
2. Hearing
Ishida’s voice is high and squeaky, no matter how he tries to cover it when he’s making his dramatic speeches. It grates on Renji’s nerves when they argue and nitpick about things-and Ishida somehow always manages to win the damn arguments even when he is clearly in the wrong.
But as Renji lays on the battleground littered with shinigami bodies, bleeding profusely, Ishida’s voice- which curses vice-captain’s stupidity as the quincy tries to stem the flow of blood-is the only thing that keeps him from slipping into the darkness.
3. Smell
After fighting alongside Ishida, Renji automatically associates the scent of burnt flesh with the archer.
Quincy arrows are different from shinigami blades; the arrows, heavily packed with destructive spiritual power, obliterate Hollows completely, wiping them from existence in both the human and spirit worlds. Renji can smell the stench of burning blood and bones in the air, long after the corpses decay away into nothingness.
4. Taste
When Renji kisses Ishida for the first time, he tastes a hint of salt and the bitterness of green tea. Their warm lips and wet mouths meet only briefly, but the taste still lingers on the shinigami’s tongue after he pulls back.
Most people think that these two flavors don’t go well together, but Renji isn’t so sure he agrees. So he leans forward to sample it a second time, just to make sure.
5. Touch
There’s a scar that runs across Ishida’s left shoulder.
It’s a faded red line, slashing across the creases of lean, firm muscles. The fourth division healers got to it before it could become a permanently crippling injury, but Kurotsuchi’s soul cutter still left its mark.
Renji finds it, one of the times he’s exploring the quincy’s body. As he runs his sword-callused fingers inquiringly across the old injury, Ishida shudders and pulls away.
