...and now I know why the show's opening theme is called 'Dramatic.'

Okay, this one is almost as weird as the absolutely absurd run I had with David Pauley earlier (which I did not live-blog; you can find screencaps here, however). I decided to take five of my favorite Ookiku Furikabutte characters and send them out on the Trail, and these are the results...

Woohoo, Oofuri Time!

This could get slashy. Beware.

So I finally decided to do an Oofuri run because, well, I could, and because Mihashi Ren looks exactly like Clay Buchholz and that scares and amuses me. So let’s get going here…

Party:

Abe Takaya: The most rational person in the party and hence the leader. Nishiura’s level-headed catcher with a knack for developing pitchers, amongst other things. Has a personality eerily similar to that of Jason Varitek, but that’s irrelevant.

Mihashi Ren: Clay Buchholz with an inferiority complex. Er…Nishiura’s starting pitcher. Starts out with low confidence, but gradually builds it due to his trust in Abe and their continued success as a battery. Has a wide arsenal of breaking balls and spots his pitches beautifully, but lacks velocity. Oh, and he runs like a dork.

Tajima Yuuichiro: Uhm…well, yeah. Brilliant hitter (bats cleanup) and competent third baseman. A bit of an idiot, but makes up for his stupidity with enthusiasm. Bonds with Mihashi, as neither of them is exactly a Rhodes Scholar (i.e. they’re not good students). Forgot to masturbate yesterday.

(I am dead serious on that last bit. Tajima actually yells out, "Oh, crap! I forgot to masturbate yesterday!" on the team bus on the way to training camp.)

Hanai Azusa: Nishiura’s captain and another fine hitter, although he cannot seem to figure out Tajima’s sheer talent (Tajima being a batting prodigy of sorts). Is usually levelheaded, but can fly into bouts of rage if provoked (frequently by Tajima, who he finds annoying yet is frequently slashed with). Plays right field, but can pitch in an emergency.

Sakaeguchi Yuuto: Nishiura’s second baseman and honestly one of my favorite characters in the canon, if only because he is an easily amused middle infielder and therefore reminds me of Jed Lowrie. Unlike Jed, he appears to be able to keep the ball on the ground when he bunts, however. Generally friendly and is one of the first players on the team to attempt to befriend Mihashi, as well.

Occupation and supplies: You know the drill by now…

Budget: $1600

Purchases:
4 yoke of oxen: $160
1600 lbs of food: $320
12 sets of clothing: $120
8 boxes of ammunition: $16
3 spare wagon wheels: $30
2 spare wagon axles: $20
2 spare wagon tongues: $20

Time to go!

March 1st: Hanai immediately has dysentery.

Tajima immediately makes fun of him and gets chased around the wagon.

March 2nd: Hanai breaks his leg.

Tajima makes fun of him again, this time knowing that Hanai cannot chase him around the wagon. He also writes dirty things on the cast just to amuse himself.

March 3rd: Mihashi breaks his arm.

Abe immediately becomes concerned and tends to him, leaving the wagon-driving up to Sakaeguchi for the time being.

March 8th: The party arrives at the Kansas River. After analyzing the situation, Abe opts to take the ferry (the river is 645 feet across and 7 feet deep). They wait three days and pay $5, but it’s worth not taking the risk.

March 11th: …it turns out the ferry was a bigger risk than anyone thought.

Abe curses himself out, frustrated at his seemingly good judgment actually being horrible. And although he’s totally not willing to admit it, Hanai seriously misses Tajima. Mihashi is almost too afraid to get back in the wagon, but Abe drags him in and they move on.

March 12th: Hanai already has his third injury of the trip.

He wishes Tajima were around to write something on his cast.

March 16th: The party arrives at the Big Blue River. It’s 253 feet across and 5.4 feet deep, so Abe elects to caulk the wagon and float it across. Much to his relief, they make it, but he’s still incredibly angry with himself for killing two of his teammates.

March 18th: Mihashi develops a fever.

Abe immediately begins tending to him, which means Hanai is driving the wagon with a broken arm and a broken leg. Ah, well, he’s the captain - he can do anything!

March 19th: Mihashi dies.

Abe is devastated.

March 23rd: Abe and Hanai arrive at Fort Kearney. They restock on supplies and move on.

March 25th: Hanai has exhaustion. Maybe it’s because he spent some time trying to drive a wagon with a broken arm and a broken leg.

April 1st: Severe blizzard. Lose one day.

April 7th: Abe and Hanai arrive at Chimney Rock. They find it uninteresting and move on.

April 9th: A theft occurs, but it is an EPIC FAIL.

April 12th: Abe and Hanai arrive at Fort Laramie. They move on quickly because they have plenty of supplies and are healthy.

April 16th: Wrong trail. Lose three days. Abe gets mad at himself again.

May 1st: Abe and Hanai arrive at Independence Rock. They write their names on it in kanji to confuse future historians.

May 4th: An ox wanders off, and they lose three days trying to find it.

May 13th: Abe and Hanai arrive at South Pass. Abe opts to make for the Green River.

May 18th: Abe and Hanai arrive at the Green River. It is 420 feet across and 22.7 feet deep. Although he hates ferries, Abe is forced to take one across the river. This time, though, they make it safely across, and all is well.

May 25th: FIRE!

Abe is PISSED.

May 27th: The ox gets lost again, but this time it only takes them one day to find it.

June 3rd: Abe and Hanai find an abandoned wagon with one axle, two sets of clothing and 63 bullets. Score!

June 5th: Abe and Hanai arrive at Soda Springs, but they move on quickly.

June 7th: Hanai is afflicted with yet another injury.

June 8th: A wagon wheel breaks, and neither Abe nor Hanai can fix it. They have to trade for one because all their spares were lost in the fire. After a few days, they give up roughly 100 pounds of food to get a new wheel, but this is okay because the next stop is only a few miles off.

June 14th: Abe and Hanai arrive at Fort Hall and restock their supplies.

June 18th: That darn ox gets lost for two days! Stupid ox!

June 23rd: Abe and Hanai discover Peter Chimaera’s gravesite.

They are horribly, horribly confused.

June 26th: The trail is impassable for seven days. Abe is not amused.

July 5th: Now the trail is impassable for nine days. Abe is even less amused.

July 18th: Abe and Hanai arrive at the Snake River. It’s 1000 feet across and 6 feet deep in the middle, and due to his obvious lack of skill at getting across rivers without disaster Abe hires some help for two sets of clothing.

July 26th: Hanai is struck by disaster yet again.

July 29th: Abe and Hanai arrive at Fort Boise. They move on quickly because they’re reasonably close to their destination.

July 30th: Hanai gets hurt again.

Perhaps he’ll be the next Santana!

August 10th: The trail is once again impassable for nine days. Abe is absolutely steamed.

August 21st: Abe and Hanai arrive at and pass through the Blue Mountains. Abe opts to make for the Dalles immediately, as Fort Walla Walla is out of the way and they have everything they need.

August 26th: The wagon tongue breaks, but Abe and Hanai are able to repair it, much to their delight.

August 31st: Abe and Hanai lose a day to heavy fog. Yeah, they’re in the Pacific Northwest now.

September 3rd: They arrive at the Dalles. Since there is an option to do so, Abe immediately opts to take a toll road instead of floating down the river. Sure, it sets him back $9, but at least he’s not floating anywhere!

September 6th: They lose another day to heavy fog.

September 8th: …and another day…

September 14th: Abe and Hanai arrive in the Willamette Valley! However, they fail to make the leaderboard. Oh, well. If only that goddamn ferry hadn’t broken in the beginning…

By the way, this is the first official live-blog run in which I've made it to Oregon. I have made it before, but this is the first live-blog in which characters reach the Willamette Valley. I broke my curse!
