Looking up down south.

Damn that's a cheesy small-town-newspaper title but whatever, it fits the post.

Hi, My name is Gurley and I am here today to spread a little positivity around. There are a lot of posts about the heat, about how the world done gone insanity and just generally bad news everywhere you look. I'm not down with that. Now is the time to look around and take stock of the good stuff around you.

In that vein, I give you some of the reasons why living in Memphis is awesome.

* Memphis Roller Derby; If you haven't been to a MRD bout then you are missing out on one of the funnest nights out you can have. Imagine this, a Memphis team that wins. Yes! Win or lose though, Women's Flat Track Roller Derby is well worth making plans around.

* Muddy's Bakeshop; The words "badass" and "Cupcake" don't usually go together but we make an exception when it comes to Muddy's. They craft such divine works of cake and frosting that you make you think they grind up real angels in the angel food.

* The local music scene; Whether it's the stars of $5 cover like Snowglobe, Al Kapone and Amy LaVere or long time stalwarts like Pezz, the local music scene has never sounded better. You can find great live music on most any night of the week here.

* Goner and Shang-ri-la record shops; Where are you gonna go to pick up your favorite music from these local artists? Goner and Shang-ri-la are great places to start. Be careful when you walk into these places though. I always walk out with a lot more records and a lot less cash than I intended to.

* Sputnik in front of Joes Liquors; Dude, that thing is just cool.

and last but not least....

* Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes!; That's right. We are on the precipus of great change here in the river city. New projects are under way right now such as the Greenbelt Parkway, A biking and pedestrian thourghfare that will stretch from Midtown to Cordova, and a new midtown skatepark(Memphis' first since Jetway closed in the late 70's). Also, things are looking good for the Mud Island revamp, including the country's largest and most unique skatepark. If progress continues along the lines it has been, this will be something special.

However it changes and whatever may come, I am proud to call Memphis my home. This town just has a living soul that I couldn't find in any other city I've been to. Sure, we have a soaring crime rate and sometimes unbearable weather, but I still wouldn't live anywhere else.

turning it around.
