I was rehearsing last night with my band, playing this slow funk groove. It calls for a little bit of improvising every 8 or 16 bars, and listening to what was coming out of me, I realize I'd subconsciously (and finally) internalized some of the things Squarepusher does when he plays the drums (or chops up recordings of himself playing the drums; it's hard to tell). I was referencing tracks like Iambic 9, or the stuff on Budakhan Mindphone. And I remember playing this same style on the metal tunes I recorded over the last two weekends. This made me very happy!
