It feels good to get calls to do session work. It feels great to be told, sure, go ahead and do the arrangement.

Started getting back my double bass chops last week. I've got an upcoming project that will need them. I didn't want to just dive back in without even a minimum level of ability. I didn't need to worry that my left foot had forgotten what to do, just that it had lost the coordination for it.

I'm starting to get it back. I don't know if I'll ever get my raw speed back - when I was a lot younger I could play 16ths at what felt like 180bpm - but that's cool. I think I can pull off more interesting stuff now anyway.

"Feet - go." Rumbling starts, painfully slow. "Hands, do stuff." My hands start improvising jazz patterns, drum & bass stuff. Aaah, nice. This is the stuff I was never able to pull off before, at any speed.

I said to my friend, at this point, I've got the first three tunes down but I worry, sort of philosophically, that I don't think about the drums the way I used to. He replied, that's cool man. Fresh perspective is good.
