This morning, I picked John Mellencamp's The Lomesone Jubilee to listen to on the drive to work. I'd not listened to that particular CD in quite a while. Proving that true art is timeless, it immediately hit me that the album is just as relevant now, if not more so, than when it was released in 1987. The album is basically a statement on the plight of the disenfranchised in America in the late Reagan era. However, as result of mismanagement of the economy by those who control it, the situation is so much worse now. If you've never listened to the album, or haven't listened in a while, do so. Its immediate relevance will really strike you. This particular lyric from "Paper in Fire" is spot on when as to what has caused the current crisis.
There's a good life
Right across the green fields
And each generation
Stares at it from afar
But we keep no check
On our appetites
So the green fields turn to brown
Like paper in fire
