It is my belief that it is easier to love the image you have in your head of someone (or something) than when they are present around you. People, animals, and activities are far more tolerable when they exist in the confines of my imagination. Once-irritating flaws are lessened, like scars viewed from a distance, and with that same idea of distance, moderate beauty becomes almost awing. It is not difficult to nip and tuck both the physical, mental, and emotional traits of a person when their contact with you is limited to your own mind. This is all well and good- it is a lovely thing to be able to use your Mind’s Eye. Unfortunately, this concept has also proved problematic for me. Time and time again in my life, I have conquered up an image of a person or event as I see fit, pinching here, poking there, blurring the faults and adding delicious tidbits. And time and time again, when faced with the reality of good-and-bad that is each and every one of us, I have been taken aback. It is a major relationship setback, and I tell you this from experience.
