Focus the cause ...

Today, I received an e-mail from the LGBT-rights group, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Subject: "Call House Leadership Today: Stop Increase in Abstinence-Only Funding!"

I understand that as a Liberal cause, we should take stands against mind-narrowing, ignorance-enducing and entirely useless legislation, appointments, nogoodnikery and the like.

But at the same time, I'm a little disgusted at this notice being sent from an LGBT-rights group. I would venture a guess at the confab that inspired that decision, but maybe it breaks down to a dominant personality wanting to embrace everything while making a personal point to the single-minded guy going, "Can we please refocus on the task at hand, please: ruining traditional marriage?" and then getting out-voted.

It's not that -- and I speak as a Liberal, bleeding heart and all -- I am in any way, shape or form, supportive of abstinence-only sex "education," but it feels a little out of the realm of the primary mission of The Task Force. I'll grant that health and HIV/AIDS awareness figures significantly into the cause, but as far as grassroots lobbying and power building for the LGBT community, it misses the mark ... just a tad.

If The Task Force were to launch an HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, sexual orientation-based education and sexual/mental health effort in Congress, I would totally be on board. But as it stands, I'm being asked to make my voice heard against a monolith of sexual "education" and its funding.

I say: be proactive, not reactive, queerists.
