Heee. Very nice evening yesterday - Phil popped up at the last minute with a spare ticket to see Regina Spektor in Hyde Park! It was AWESOME. She played a lot of songs from the new album which I don't know yet, but which were very pretty. And then she played On the Radio (UH!OH!), and Apres Moi (asdkjflk I love the Russian so much it's such an absurdly awesome language), and Poor Little Rich Boy (the only point at which I was really sad I was too short and too far back to see what her hands were doing), and then it just kept getting better because every time she stopped or came back on for an encore I thought 'oh, if she would just play Sampson, or Us, or Ghost of Corporate Future, or Fidelity, then my life would be complete'. And then those were the last four songs she played. And it was made of joy. She was really adorable and seemed really thrilled by the number of people there and how enthusiastic we were.
And... listening to Us, played live, by her, was a very odd semi-meta experience. Because I was a fan of the song before the vid, but now they're so inextricably linked in my mind. And gigs like this are a kind of amazing communal fan experience just to start with... I totally fail at expressing what it was like, but odd and completely awesome just about begins to cover it.
Also it didn't rain, unlike Saturday, when we and most of the audience for Ray Davies' Kenwood gig got caught in a massive thunderstorm - about an hour and a half of thunder and lightning, hail and flooding, and continuous showers for most of the evening after that. But still, none of the electrics blew up, the show went on and it was good, if somewhat damp and only playing to about half the audience it would have been otherwise.
You know something that I never thought I would say? One of the perks of having short hair is it's really easy to get a radio mic on...
(Also: Crouch End Festival Chorus. I know it's not as obvious as it could be, but it's really not that hard to remember. Note that I'm mostly addressing this to actual journalists who did not do the research rather than any specific slightly dotty rock gods who may have introduced us incorrectly a couple of times during concerts where they clearly have more important things to think about. But still.)
Meanwhile, in other vaguely music related news and semi-prompted by
chaosdeathfish's earlier post, I feel I need to get my hands on some Japanese pop music for procrastination writing background music purposes. I currently have a couple of random J-rock songs I can't actually name that I'm not desperately fond of, an album of Studio Ghibli songs which isn't quite the right thing, and the theme tune to Ouran High School Host Club... *bats eyelashes hopefully*
