The Year of Doing Big Fun Scary Things Together. I'm just... putting that out there.
At work the other day, we discussed new year's resolutions and also obsessive geekiness. Some people colour-code their emails, others file all their receipts, I described my geeky but pleasurably ineffective DVD sorting method.
I found it very interesting that in general, my obsessive geekiness which leads to posts like this one and to, to give the most successful example I can think of, the History A-Level Revision Notes Of Win, does not translate into doing well at resolutions.
Mostly because most resolutions are harder than history exams, of course. Especially when the history exams are actually on something interesting (it was 100 years of Civil Rights in the US. I remember almost none of it now but my revision was fantastic).
But still, there may be something in the idea of treating resolutions as an exercise in geekery to see if it helps. Of thinking of it as, to be excessively geeky about it, the opportunity to level up at life this year. I got my +1 Person this year pretty much just by showing up. Maybe +2 for occasional bad weather. I got my Level 1 Homeowner and probably Level 2 Functioning Adult Person (can has both job and flat)...
With a bit more effort I could get Level 2 Writer (or even Level 3, though I think you have to burn a rank of luck for that... good thing ranks of luck are inexhaustible, if only applicable with a GM's say-so), plus Level 2 Musician, Level 2 Editor and I'm sure I can manage to buy, say, a Ring Of Engagement. Certainly the only limit to how much I can add to my hit points, speed, strength, stamina etc is how much time and effort I put into it.
I hate effort, obviously. If it turns out I can't get over the whole hating effort part of the equation, all the geekery is for naught. But still. It might at least be more fun than just putting 'lose weight, play the cello, write more things' like I do every single year.
... wow. I need to stop typing now. Can you imagine how big a geek I would be if I actually went LARPing?
