Dollhouse thinkings

Casting brief for Joss Whedon's new show, Dollhouse, which I haven't done much squeeing about, mostly because it was all quite up in the air during the strike. (Cast list contains spoilers for the general shape of the show, although not too much really.)

It's an Eliza Dushku vehicle. *pause for the internets to breathe a collective happy sigh of Faith-appreciation*

She's Echo, who is a woman who lives along with a couple of others in a secret facility where she constantly has her personality wiped clean and reprogrammed with what she needs to complete that week's mission. It's not specified what kind of missions, partly because I think they're going for as wide a variety as they can, which sounds pretty awesome to me - but it certainly seems like her missions will quite regularly involve arse-kickings.

*another Eliza-Dushku-kicking-arse sigh pause*

Anyway. This cast list. I point it out partly as an excuse to talk about the show, which I'm looking forward to in that way where it's Joss and Eliza Dushku and, y'know, Joss... and partly because the descriptions are interesting.

All the cast but one are described as 'any ethnicity' - the only one that's specified says 'Asian or any ethnicity but not Caucasian'. Also, one of the characters is described as 'beautiful and heavy'.

... how much the potential for diversity there will actually translate on screen (and whether they'll actually find someone you could describe as 'heavy' with a straight face) is yet to be seen and I remain cynical. But I do think that it's interesting. Especially the repitition of 'any ethnicity' which... flags up the ethnicity issue in a way that leaving any mention of ethnicity off would not have done. It's like... it's not prescribing, but it's not ignoring that there's an issue there either.

Hmm.

(In other news, CEFC have officially had the email saying that, tentatively, perhaps, we may be doing a Very Exciting If You're Me Soundtrack Recording in a few weeks. And I'm really hoping that they've learnt from the Doctor Who fiasco and not asked more people than they can take and that I'll actually get to do it this time. On the other hand I've just got an email cancelling a different - slightly dull - recording, so, yeah. Still treating nothing as definite. Will probably post a flailing omg squee post about it after it's happened, if it does and I'm actually there...)
