Windows and stuff

I am a very bad fangirl and still haven't seen the last two episodes of Torchwood, or indeed at least two episodes before that. I'm probably going to wait until Jessie comes back so we can catch up together. Am proud of the flist for their thoughtful lj-cuts, and find myself too squeeful to care about the little bits of visual spoiler I have seen. But still. *fingers in ears, lalalalalala*

Speaking of anotherusedpage, there was a communication yesterday, the jist of which was 'wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!' So that's nice.

cottonwoolfairy and I went ice skating for her birthday yesterday, at Somerset House. It was lovely, and by the end of our hour I actually managed to go all the way along one side of the rink without touching the side or falling over. This is a significant improvement on the last time I went, which was about ten years ago. Although I did get about halfway across and realise what I was doing, viz sliding along a big frozen puddle on two very thin pieces of metal with very little control over anything but the general direction of movement. It is very much like Douglas Adams flying - if you think too hard about what you're doing you find yourself not doing it any more. Furthermore the best thing to remember is DON'T PANIC.

We've said we're going to go again soon. After all, I do live maybe 20 minutes walk from Ally Pally where they have an indoor ice rink all year round. Don't know if it's always open.

The physics of figure skating and ice dancing, particularly involving two people, is absolutely astonishing. I'm guessing few figure skaters think about their forces and resistance (I hate physics, I don't know why I'm thinking about it either), but, it must be such a precise (if instinctive) science, knowing how fast you're going and what'll happen if you put pressure on one foot and then lift the other one up and then colliding on purpose with people and the spinning and lifting while, again I say, standing on a frozen puddle with thin pieces of metal strapped to your feet. As cottonwoolfairy pointed out halfway round our first lap, I have suddenly even more admiration for John Barrowman than I used to. (I didn't watch the programme but I am reliably informed that he woz robbed.)

(EDIT: Ally Pally skating times:
Monday to Friday term time, 11am til 1:30 and 2 til 5:30. £6 entry and skate hire, except between 4:30 and 5:30 when it's £5.
Saturday and Sunday term time, 10 - 12:30 and 2 - 4:30. £7.
It'd be nice to go when it's slightly cheaper, but it'd be much less crowded if we went during the day. Also it's shut from the 24th - 27th of January but open the rest of the year as far as I can say. Also also? They do weddings. *boggles*)

And we are going to see Wicked on the first of February! I have tickets, they are here. *strokes them*

I've got windows! In my room! Windows you can see out of! They are whole pieces of glass and they are relatively clean and you can open them and shut them and you can turn them all the way over to clean them and they have blinds that you can actually open and shut without fiddling with bloody pieces of string or making a bloody racket. In fact they are silent blinds! I used to have nasty metal venetian things that never really opened or shut properly and made the room permanently dark and occasionally fell out of their slots, usually onto my head, usually very loudly, usually in the middle of the night.

New windows! This is so incredibly exciting. Oh! And the one where the whole frame had to be replaced was the one I painted green really badly when I was about eight and now apart from the bits I got on the surrounding wall it is back to a nice plain wood colour! *happysigh*

I'm posting this in a window of internet workage - Dad is assembling computers on the kitchen downstairs. We are getting a new server, which is enormous, and the server computer is going to be Dad's, and Dad's is going to be mine, and everyone gets new bits. There are very exciting pieces of gleaming machinery scattered around the house, most of which are called things like Striker! and Excite! and I Am A Manly Gaming Machine, Grr! Dad showed me some and then showed me the most expensive piece he's bought for this project, which is a chip about the size of my fingernail.

room, tv, squee, computers, skating, musicals
