[ canon point ] Chapter 40, after the group is separated.
[ age ] Appears to be around 15-16, but is actually “ten times older than a grandma.” (from Chapter 34)
[ history ] There are two worlds that exist - the Light, our world, and the Shadow, its opposite. There are inhuman creatures that defend the and protect the balance of these two worlds. These creatures were once human, but became something more when a King from one of the worlds changes them Lulu is one such being, a “shin” from the shadow world. She works for a King from the shadow world, one who wants to take control over the light along with his own realm. She and her colleagues work to defeat the last resistance of the light.
Lulu’s first appearance is jumping down from the top of a building to berate her kokuchi (shadow creatures) for attacking people rather than finding the person she sent them to look for. One of the people who was attacked, Aya, gets into a fight with Lulu. It quickly turns into a one-sided battle with Aya swinging a metal pipe like a sword and Lulu dodging it easily. The shin tries to use the Aya’s friend, a shin called Akira, to help her by flirting with him. Though it fails, this has the added affect of enraging Aya even more. The battle continues, and eventually, Lulu pulls out her own weapon: a whip that saps the energy out of anyone it hits. Aya can no longer battle, so Lulu turns her attention back to Akira and her original mission: to find the person who made Akira a shin, a man named Shirogane. When Akira denies knowing him, she tells him that’s impossible. Only the kings, of which there are two, can make humans into shin. One is her superior, Homurabi, and the other is Shirogane, who turned Akira into a shin. As Akira does not work with her, he must be one of Shirogane’s shin.
Akira bombardes Lulu with questions, to which Lulu replies, “You really don’t know anything, do you, Akira-kun?” She thought he might know more than she does because he looks like someone named Ryuko. Ryuko was a king of the light, but before she can tell Akira this, Shirogane appears. Lulu seemingly forgets about Akira, running straight towards Shirogane, arms outstretched. Shirogane brushes her aside. He angrily demands to know why she is there, to which she replies that she only came to see if the rumors that he was alive were true. She returns to the shadow world immediately after.
Some time later, Lulu returns to eliminate Aya on Homurabi’s orders and with her desire to get rid of Aya, who is an “eyesore.” Lulu traps Aya in a barrier that no one can exit from and attacks her using kokuchi. Aya demands that Lulu fight herself, and she complies, summoning a giant white snake with her whip. She still doesn’t fight fair, though, using her kokuchi to keep Aya busy until the snake can attack. Once the snake bites you, the area (i.e, an arm) will be as heavy as lead. Aya’s grandfather steps in and defeats Lulu’s kokuchi in order to even the odds. Aya becomes determined to win, summoning a second sword in the process. Since Aya is actually a double-blade user, she becomes exponentially stronger, avoiding Lulu’s snake and forcing her into close combat. Lulu is losing badly, so she brings out her last weapon: turning the room within the barrier into an extension of own body, complete with teeth and flesh.
Lulu seems to be winning, trapping Aya and her grandfather. Aya, intensely angry at Lulu’s attitude that she is superior because she is a shin, cuts through the flesh holding her and hurtles straight towards her opponent. Before she gets close enough to attack, Aya is swallowed by one of the “mouths” in the room. Her grandfather slices open the mouth and releases her so that she can finish Lulu. Lulu’s barrier is breaks after Aya’s attack, rendering her powerless. Lulu demands that Aya treat her like an enemy to the end and kill her, but Aya declares Lulu a worthy rival and doesn’t kill her. Lulu replies that that way of thinking will get her killed, but Aya only looks forward to the battle. Lulu then returns to the shadow world once more- or so we think.
The reality is that Lulu starts living on the light side of the world, pretending to be a student and transferring into Aya and Akira’s class. She has declared Aya her friend and is staying in her house with Aya’s parents’ permission (a fact they’ve neglected to inform Aya of, though Lulu is only too happy to). Lulu’s whip is broken, she has almost no powers, and she has lost a battle to a human. In short, if she goes home, she’ll be killed. This fact has made her realize the destructive path their world has taken, and she wants to go back to the happy times when there was a balance between the light and shadow. She’s willing to help the people from the light side defeat her king if they let her. Shirogane knows they will need a guide in the shadow world, and as he is the de facto leader, she is allowed to join the group. They take her to see “Master”, one of the kings of light. He is blind, so in place of sight, he can “see” one’s true nature and cannot be lied to. He confirms that Lulu is telling the truth and helps open a portal to the shadow world.
Once on the other side, Lulu uses her kokuchi to make doubles of the humans so that they can stay on the shadow side without disappearing, as you can’t enter one without having a doppelgänger on the opposite side. She opens to door to the palace, which is a giant labyrinth, but the group is soon attacked by kokuchi bearing Homurabi’s mark. They are separated into three groups. Lulu’s group is herself and two humans, Aya and Kengo.
[ personality ] Lulu is a flirty, bubbly person on the outside. She comes off as a giddy schoolgirl that puts fun before duty, if she has any sense of duty at all. She speaks in a cutesy fashion, often switching between referring to herself as “Lulu” and “I”. She also has a habit of elongating her words. This girl has no sense of personal space, regularly clinging to an arm or draping her upper body over someone’s shoulders without permission. While her outer personality is not an act, Lulu lets most people only see this shallow part of her. She has a lot more depth hidden beneath her perkiness.
Lulu isn’t human. Despite her looks, she’s been around for a long time and is much more knowledgeable than she lets on. She’s good at playing to people’s weaknesses by pretending to be dumber than she really is, even giving away important information just to see someone’s reaction to it. She doesn’t hesitate to use her looks to her advantage, either, whether it be by antagonizing another girl so she’ll make mistakes or flirting with a boy to gain his help. She is content to let others do the fighting for her if she can help it. Besides, she enjoys getting people worked up.
Lulu is just as easy to play through her emotions as her victims, however. Her first reaction to name-calling is to call a name right back. Lulu is used to get what she wants, even if she has to use force to get it. She’s perfectly willing to attack with her full strength if you’ve made her angry enough, despite the possibility of losing her powers if defeated made doubly worse by her fear of death. She holds grudges, to the point where hurting you gives her a kind of sadistic pleasure. As Lulu comments, “I don’t mind hurting others, but I hate getting hurt myself.”
Despite all this, Lulu is a very trustworthy ally. She throws herself full-tilt into her relationships and will put herself in mortal danger to protect her friends. She especially admires those who are sensitive and kind to others, even in battle. Her first duty is to her role in the world’s balance, but she chose for some time to remain by her traitor king’s side even as he murdered people she was close to. She wants to right the imbalance in her world and redeem her comrades who have forgotten their purpose. Lulu is loyal to those she sides with and once she’s made a decision, she sticks with it, even when facing old friends-turned-foes.
[ appearance ] Lulu is the one with pink hair in
this picture. Here's
another. [ abilities ] Lulu’s abilities as a shin are:
- Does not age and, unless she is killed by another person, won’t die.
- Superior strength and speed, i.e., she can jump down from the top of a building and be perfectly fine, and she can easily dodge a human’s attacks.
- Being a shin, a creature that exists to help balance the world of Shadow with the world of Light, she needs a doppelgänger, aka a shadow, to be seen in the world of light (the normal world). She uses her kokuchi for this.
- Controls “
kokuchi”, aka shadow creatures, and can make them do her bidding such as attacking, searching and mimicking the forms of others (They aren’t very bright. Her kokuchi often make mistakes or get distracted).
- Is invisible to humans unless seen in moonlight, by someone already aware of shin, or by using a doppelgänger.
- Possesses a whip that sucks the energy out of anyone it hits, rendering them weak and unable to move.
- Can summon a giant white snake whose bite leaves the bitten area incredibly heavy and hard to move.
- Decent fighter, able to dodge and retaliate effectively (though is weak to close combat).
- Can create a barrier, keeping everyone within the limits of it unable to leave.
- Can turn the area within her barrier into a fleshy, living monster with teeth in order to “eat” an opponent. This is a last resort, however, as when it is defeated, Lulu loses nearly all her power and weaponry.
As of chapter 32, however, Lulu has lost almost all of her powers as a shin, aside from her control over kokuchi, her invisibility and her apparent immortality. It is uncertain whether her other powers can be regained.

[ first person ] [There’s a girl in your mirror! She looks rather distressed.]
I haaaate this! Aya-chan, Kengo-kun, where are you? I didn’t think you two were that slow! Lulu can’t wait forever, you know. Oh, won’t someone help Lulu? She wants to go home already. She has lots of things to do, you know!
[Actually, better make that annoyed. Very, very annoyed.]
[ third person ]
Lulu stood atop a building, watching the people passing quickly below her. She was completely soaked, having been kicked out of the house and into the rain for distracting Aya during her studying.
Grandpa had been kind enough to offer her something to keep her busy: a sparring match with him. She’d thought about it for all of two seconds, but there was no way she was going to go up against that old man again. He’d been scary enough once, Lulu wasn’t dumb enough to try her luck a second time without any shin power to back her up. Even then, she doubted she’d win. The people in the Suzuno family were collectively more crazy than any creature she’d run into either of the two worlds. She’d rather take her chances with the rain.
“Lulu’s so booored. Aya-chan, you’re too mean,” she complained. She continued staring down at the crowds below before she spotted a target. She leapt down, landing silently and invisibly in an alleyway. She quickly forced a kokuchi into shadow-duty and skipped her way out onto the street. Lulu moved quickly, grabbing onto a boy’s arm and squeezing gently.
“Ah, could you help me find the train station? Lulu’s gotten herself all lost,” she fluttered her eyelashes, smiling with just right amount of confusion and flirtation.
At least this would distract her until Aya calmed down enough for her to sneak back in.
