Favorite book(s): and why

"River God" by Wilbur Smith, "The Ramses Saga" by Christian Jacq, "The Great Gatsby" by F Scott Fitzgerald , "Phantom" by Susan Kay

Why?

The study of ancient egypt is a very important part of who I am. I worked on a novel of Egypt from the ages of eight to fourteen and those books helped me do it. I read Gatsby at a time in my life when I really didn't believe that literature mattered to anyone and it was just the wakeup I needed. "Phantom" well that's obvious right?

Favorite author:

Johnathan Franzen, F Scott Fitzgerald, Toni Morrison, Francesca Lia Block, Anne Rice (before she found religion and stopped listening to what her characters had to say

Why?

I am a poet and a prose writer, so all my favorite writers have a lyrical style that bridges the gap between those. This way I can learn about my own process of both.

Favorite genre:

Historical fiction, gothic

Why?

I really hate modernity, when I read something I want it to take me out of my present. Gothic work appeals to my dark personality

Book you loved that you didn't expect to:

"Dracula"

Book you hated though you thought you'd like it:

"The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux (Yea I know, oxymoron) and omg "Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer

Why?

That was my first Gothic novel. Unlike a lot of other novels of that period, I truly believe it to be timeless

Why?

Leroux hasn't got a clue what he's writing--romance, thriller, horror, faux-non-fiction. It has brilliant potential but it's all over the place. "Twilight" had some great ideas but the writing style was just so immature by comparison to Rice. I think that was the last "young adult" book I read

First book you ever remember reading:

"Fox in Socks" it was how I discovered poetry

Favorite book as a teen:

"Gypsy Rizka" by Lloyd Alexander

Why You Love Books:

Since I learned to talk all I've ever wanted was to hear stories. Wasn't long before I wanted to tell my own. Every single book I read teaches me something about my own style as a writer.
