On stylization

Pink's musing has prompted me to muse.
A while back I got a comment on "Song in Red & Gray" that critisized what has been called the "staccato prose" of the piece, calling it "exciting in the short run but tedious in the long run" and saying that I "was using the story as merely a vehicle for the style." At the time I was mildly insulted by the phrasing of this, but at the midpoint of the story I must admit I don't think I'll ever be writing in this way again. Naturally I cannot swap styles now, that would just be literarily unsound, but this sort of prose just does not work for me. I like description, I like painting a picture with words. I'm beginning to find this sort of writing very limiting. Sometimes I wonder if it's not crippling the story. Truth be told the style itself began in an effort to keep the story short and concise, back when I merely wanted a string of vingettes that were based on emotion rather than plot. After thirty plus chapters, you all see how that worked. Now that there's a story in place, the chapters are going to be slightly longer than they've been previously, because I want to focus more on saying what I have to say. I think I can manage this and still keep the flow of the story ::prays::
