I love my Grandma for many, many reasons. She understands me and encourages me. She listens to me and laughs with me. Before this turns into a Hallmark card let me get right to the point: I don't know if my Grandma has ever read any of my creative writing, but she always tells people what a great writer I am. Today a very nice older gentleman came up to us while we were sitting at the Da Shin eating lunch. He overheard us talking about my employment search and wanted to offer me a part-time position at his home inspection company. I wasn't sure if I should tell him my work experience while he was standing there but before I could open my mouth my Grandma told him that I was a terrific writer and was trying to "crack the writing barrier", as she put it, meaning I was trying to figure out how to get paid for my writing.
As we left the restaurant I tried to think if she came to any of my readings in college or if I had ever given her a poem to read and I can't remember that she has read anything I wrote. But this is not the first time I've heard my Grandma telling someone that I was a great writer. I don't know if anyone else has someone like this in their life, someone who believes in them unconditionally, but I hope that everyone has someone like my Grandma at some point.
***Anyway, I want to say a big Congratulations to Tim and Elizabeth! I'm sorry I couldn't be there to witness your wedding but I was thinking of you both with a great big smile! Congratulations again and maybe someday I can come visit you both in England and see the wedding album and listen to what a wonderful occasion it was!***
