Lestat

Accompanied by Mi Madre, Jenn, and a small entourage of Bernie Taupin fans, I journeyed to New York to see Lestat on Broadway this past Friday. Mummy Dearest and I had planned this trip since we first heard that Bernie and Elton were talking about doing a musical based off of Lestat. We wanted to see it opening night, but, alas, when we purchased the tickets they were only available for the night after the opening. A couple weeks later the opening night was pushed back but we decided to stick with our original date. Fast forward five months later..

I arrived in New York sleep-deprived, hunger-ridden, with sore a train ridden rear, but at least my hair was looking fantabulous (thanks Magaly!) After dropping my stuff off in our room, Mummy Dearest and I met up with Jenn and went out to satiate our hunger. Once our stomachs were suitably , we were umbrella-ed it to Lush.

Ah Lush, how I love thee, let me count the ways...

Four bath bombs later and a now-addicted mother later, we headed back to the room to perty ourselves up. Once primping was complete, we went over to the room belonging to the small entourage of Bernie fans for strawberries and champagne before heading off to the show.

We settled into our seats. Not long after, the curtain rose. I didn't care too much for the first two numbers, but after Gabrielle's song to Lestat, I got sucked in. I was fairly ambivalent about Gabrielle, not feeling much of an attachment to her character, though Carolee's singing was superb. The character of Claudia was a brilliant transfer to the musical medium. In song, her personality literally sang through and became the darling show-stealer of the production. All the male principals were fantastic and perfect for the characters they played. Jenn nudged me during a few Labyrinth-Bowie moments, but not to worry, I was all over that.

The sets were absolutely amazing. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the conceptual art design was done by Dave McKean.

The ending was somewhat anti-climatic, we felt. We were expecting a finale rock song, but that was not the case, though the rest of the show was mightly enjoyable.

Now back home, I have pre-ordered my soundtrack and continue to reminisce with Jenn about the male principals' yum-tasticness. I hope to be able to see the musical a second time this year.
