I just started my Dear Jane quilt today. I got the computer program a few days ago in the mail. I spent yesterday learning the software and today I finally started sewing. I got 5 blocks done (6 if you count my first failure). I'm doing my whole quilt in reds, greens, and pinks. The "background" is several solid light pinks. The rest of it is going to be fairly scrappy. I'm making it fairly "traditional" besides the colors.
For those of you who don't know Dear Jane is a quilt made by Jane A. Stickle during the Civil War. It was completed in 1863. It has 255 different patterns in the quilt. Each block is 4 1/2 inches after being sewn. The quilt she made has 5602 pieces.
http://patch77.free.fr/images/gdj_ori.jpg is a link to a photograph of the original quilt if you'd like to see it. Many people have made reproductions of it, some that very closely match the original and others have made quilts inspired by the quilt.
These are my 1st two blocks:
A-6 Uncle Homer
9 Pieces
Rotary Cut and Maching pieced
This was my first block, I had to make it twice. The first time it was too small, I think I have finally gotten the hang of making "scant" 1/4 seams, and now I'm actualy getting blocks that are 5 inches instead of being an 1/8th or 1/4 inch too small.
M-5 Mother's Point
18 Pieces
Rotary Cut and Maching pieced
This block I used the version that was closer to Jane's original block. It has more pieces then the 1st pattern Brenda originally drafted.
All of the blocks are 5 inches.
And just for the hell of it...this is another project I'm also working on. I'm doing English Paper piecing. the hexagons are 1 inch to a side.
