carolinecraneNell likes going on assignment. She would never want to be an agent, but being able to go out and help, makes her feel an excitement like she has never known. People always tend to underestimate her because she is young and ‘cute’, but instead of deferring to people she admires, she just sort of bulldozes her way in and over them.
She grew up in a big family and unless you just jumped right in, you got overlooked. There were at least three conversations going on in her house at any one time, so she just bounced between them. Her father was quiet and loved computers, so Nell got into computers to have something in common with him. He was a good father, but he had a rough time with a house full of girls. Nell especially was hard to understand. He would try and have a conversation and she would just finish his sentences or talk about two or three other things.
When she went away to college she decided to major in computer tech and minor in psychology, which is where she met Nate. He was teaching a class at her college and of course she admired him. They had a small affair that ended quickly. They both knew themselves well enough to know that what they had wouldn’t last.
She loves living in California, because the weather is so warm she can ride her bike anywhere. Lately on her rides to and occasionally from work, she has been passing a guy that is gorgeous. They have made eye contact and smile at each other. She could look him up fairly easily, but she’s done that before and it gets uncomfortable when she slips with knowledge they didn’t give her. With the new year she thinks she might stop and say hi and see where it goes. Maybe next year will be the year she starts something new!

As Kensi drove home from her mom’s house, she reflected on her day. Seeing her mom again after being shot at and running for her life was just a lot to take in. She had had such anger at her mom for all those years that letting go of it was difficult, but she was glad she got a second chance.
When she pulled into her parking lot she recognized Deeks’ car. She was beyond tired, but she had to admit a little relieved she wasn’t coming home to an empty apartment. As she let herself in she noticed he had picked up most of the mess that Peter Clairmont had left. He was now asleep on her couch. She was just going to let him sleep and they could talk in the morning, but when she closed the door he woke up.
“Hey, Kens, how ya doin’?” Deeks asked.
She knew better than to tell him she was fine. He always knew that was a lie. “I’ve had better days. What are you doing in my house?”
“Well, I figured since you are going to buy me a beer every day for the rest of our lives, I’d buy us one last six pack,” he teased, “but really I just didn’t want you to come home alone, not after today.”
“Look, I know we need to talk, but Deeks I’m...”
He cut her off. “No, Kens, get some rest; I’ll be here in the morning, we can talk then.”
“Thank you, Deeks, for everything.”
He reached out to put his arms around her, careful not to jar her rib and just held her for a few minutes, convincing himself she was really there and really okay. He let go, saying, “Get some sleep, Fern.”
She went to her bedroom and lay down, realizing that they had more to talk about than her past. They needed to see about their future.
