Disclaimer: Really, I've never met Billy, Dom or any other famous people. I'm simply a fan with an overactive imagination plotting to rule the world bring world peace.
The poster was lying tattered on the floor as Hallie watched Billy stalk to the door and slam it shut. Her body twitched at the sound, then went numb. A tear slipped down her hot cheeks and slid into the corner of her mouth. She gasped for a breath, gripped the wall and took a moment to gather her thoughts. What happened to me... she shuddered and slid to the floor. Her thoughts were coming to her in clicks of information, but vague.
Taken advantage of. Overdosed. Abortion. The Truth. He's gone.
Hallie leafed fingers through her rumpled hair and pressed the tips against her temples. Her head ached and her sight was hazy. Closing her eyes, she took one deep breath, held it in for a moment and exhaled deeply and slowly. Every moment of the past couple of days was unravelling in her mind. Before the concert, she recalled being so happy knowing that Dominic was going to be in attendance, wondering that maybe he really realized he missed her and wanted her back. When Billy showed before she could see Dom though, she couldn't deny she was glad to see him as well.
Then the ceiling came down over her.
She was almost believing Billy loved her, thats how close she was to forgetting all about Dom. She was almost convinced she loved him too. Funny how the sayings always come true. Love is blind and man, was her vision clouded.
Billy had taken advantage of her.
According to Dom, Billy urged him to go after her. So he did. But just when Hallie came to New York, it was Billy she saw waiting outside her apartment - not Dom. She was weak and lonely. The two of them went out for drinks that night, but stayed sober. Neither wanted clouded judgement for the night they were soon to embark upon. She knew Billy had feelings for her for awhile, but did nothing about them. But tonight she was single and Billy was there to listen to her every complaint, wipe away her every tear.
The two of them took a cab back to his apartment. He led her through the door, into a dim but comfortable space that felt like home. They sat on his couch in the awkward silence of anticipation before Billy made a move. A kiss below her ear and a soft hand upon her cheek. She was ashamed at first to have enjoyed it. In her mind, Dom and her were still together, that she was cheating. But Billy's warm body and caressing fingers through her hair assured her this was no crime. Hallie allowed herself to relax and move one shaking hand to his stomach. He whispered to her how beautiful she was, how long he'd been waiting for this moment.
She met his eyes once the entire night - one look into those promising eyes and she gave in. It began on the couch, then quickly to the floor and before she knew it, she was allowing Billy to carry her into his bedroom. They made love that night and slept til the late hours of the morning.
But when she woke up to Billy's face after a night of dreaming about Dom, her conscience feigned her a hefty blow. What had she done? Excusing herself to get some coffee, she left Billy's apartment, with no intention of coming back. She grabbed the coffee and just as she was about to cross the street, fear stayed her feet. She couldn't move. Staring into the windows of his bedroom, Hallie began to cry guilty tears of what she had done. She cared for Billy but knew that night had come too soon. Raising her arm amidst the New York City sky, she hailed a cab back to her own apartment to think things out.
Later that night, while she sat at her table with a cup of hot tea, the phone rang. It was Billy. He apologized for the way things had occurred that night, which came as a relief to Hallie that he felt the same way.
But he had a plan.
He bought two tickets to Scotland, one for him and one for her. He wanted to start things over and spend some time with Hallie, to get to know her better. It took alot of convincing but she agreed to join him out of hope that it would keep Dom not coming after her or calling her off her mind. They were to leave in the morning.
The drive to the airport was tedious. At every stop sign and red light, Hallie considered just telling the driver to drop her off. How could she do this? Go off with Dom's best friend so soon after breaking up with him? Every moral bone in her body told her it was wrong. But she couldn't lose Billy too. And the fear of not having him was an unbearable thought. So she got off at the airport and met him inside by the gate. She recalled him being relieved she had actually shown.
She should have seen through it but she was blinded. Perhaps not blinded by love but something close to it. Hope. Faith. Two things she was sure to be wary of now.
Just before the call for the first class passengers came over the intercom, Billy recieved a phone call. She recalled asking him who it was and him ignoring her. That should have clued her in right there. When he got off the phone, he had this look of horror in his eyes that worried her. Yet he still refused to tell her who it was.
"I've got to go," he mumbled distantly as he gathered his luggage off the floor. She watched him with frightened eyes, ready to explode in tears. He was leaving her - after all she went through to get there. The struggle? The hesistance? It had been all for nothing?
"Where are you going? I can come with you!" she said, gathering her things as well. Billy shook his head furtively. Hallie gulped, hard, and lowered herself down slowly. She watched with cloudy eyes as Billy muttered one excuse after another, all the while as his words drowned in the madness of her mind.
"I'm sorry," he told her, caressing the side of her cheek softly before he turned and walked away. Hallie watched him disapear slowly through the crowds of the airport, crying even though many people were watching and whispering to their family. She had been left, just like that, as if she had meant nothing to nobody. Not even given the courtesy of an explanation.
"All first class passengers may now board the plane, all first class passengers, please." called the stewardess as Hallie glared at the ticket in her hand. If she went to Glasgow, could she expect Billy to come after her? Dom hadn't come after her. Why should she expect Billy to come after her? Perhaps he had gotten what he wanted.
So she left the airport, dragging her luggage as if it were her own heart. She went home, fell in bed, and cried until the sky darkened and her phone rang. Nearly falling off the bed, she ran to it. Whether it was Dom or Billy was of no consequence now. The sound of eithers voice would have been heaven to her ears.
But it wasn't Dom or Billy. It was Maggie Grace, the friend she had made in Hawaii when Dom was shooting episodes of his television show 'Lost'. And that was when she realized she hadn't told her friend that she had even left Hawaii after the big fight with Dom. Shamefully, she filled her friend in on what had happened the past couple days. Needless to say, it was pretty much the hot topic in every tabloid for at least a week.
'Opera singer drops movie star for his best friend', read the papers.
Hallie was thankful that a couple days later, her phone rang again. This time it was her old voice coach, Sophie Bertolo, asking her to fill in for lead female singer in the opera troupe she had started in Sydney. She was even going to finance it herself just to get her to come. How could she refuse? Taking the first flight the next morning, Hallie was on her way to Austrailia, far away from the problems she had in the States. At least thats what she thought she was doing until about a week later, when she started getting sick and very tired. Her period never came and it was becoming apparent of the situation she was now in.
Pregnant. Now here she was, a month later, slouched up against the walls of the Sydney Opera house and no better off than she'd been before this mess had begun. But at least she was wiser. Her eyes filling with tears, she realized just how naive she had been to trust Billy the way she did.
"Darling..." she heard above her. She'd heard the door open but she ignored it and continued to cry. Sophie knealt down beside her and stroked her back assuringly, "perhaps we should cancel rehearsal."
Hallie shook her head, "No, no, we can't do that. The concert is tommorow night and I still haven't practiced Barcarolle or Lascia Ch'io Pianga..." Overwhelmed with the amount of work she had forgotten about, Hallie broke down into deeper sobs. Sophie pulled her in for a hug.
"I wish you had told me," she began and patted her comfortingly, "about the baby."
"Oh Sophie, you didn't hear-" she gasped, horrified. Sophie gently pulled away and looked at her.
"It is the Sydney Opera house, love." she reminded her carefully and smirked.
"I didn't mean it. I don't want an abortion. I-I don't know what I want but I know I don't want that..." she explained hastily, "I don't know why I said it, and now that I have, I wish I hadn't."
"He hurt you. Very deeply. I bet you thought that by saying something equally hurtful would make you feel better." she sympathyzed.
"Yes," Hallie sighed, "But I don't."
"William. What do you think of him?" Sophie asked, quickly changing the subject. Hallie swiped away a tear.
"At the moment, not very highly." replied Hallie sarcastically. Sophie relaxed a smile and nodded.
"He certainly has not been very honest with you," Sophie told her, "but that doesn't mean he doesn't love you, you know." How would she know, wondered Hallie coldly, she doesn't know him.
"I don't know if I can believe that." Hallie replied bitterly.
"Well, that is your perogative." clipped Sophie, carefully readjusting her scarf. Hallie's eyes watered once more.
"Are you upset with me, Sophie?" she wondered aloud. Sophie smiled at her, comfortingly.
"My dear, whatever should I be upset with you about?" Hallie placed her hand lightly on her stomach. Still was hard to believe a baby was growing inside of her. Soon her little secret would no longer be so little.
"I know I should have told you I was, well, pregnant. I just haven't really accepted it yet myself."
"Go and rest, dear. We can talk about this in the morning." Sophie tried to dismiss her gently. Hallie sighed and feelings of guilt once more overwhelmed her.
"I can't. My father is in the hospital. I should go see him before visiting hours end."
"Will you be alright for the performance tommorow evening?" asked Sophie, concerned.
"I will not let you down, Sophie. I don't know if I've told you but I am so glad that you called me and invited me back into opera. I've never been more happy than when I am singing."
"Well, truthfully, you can't give me all the credit. It was William who called me to talk you into returning to stage."
"What?"
"He also has been financing it, out of his own pocket, for the past month."
"Why would he do that?!"
"Darling, had I the money I'd do it myself. The opera is priveledged to have you back. I was thrilled when he made the offer. And up until now, he's asked me to keep it a secret. I just imagined with all the time you had been spending together that he might have mentioned it."
"He hadn't."
"Oh dear, then, I've gone and spilled the beans, haven't I? Well, you should have known anyways and I told him that." More secrets? Hallie could take no more of this. Why is it so much to ask that if something pertains to her life that it be told to her?
"I'm getting really fed up with being left in the dark!" Hallie finally snapped.
"You know, it is possible he might have done it for your own good."
"I doubt it. He is so selfish, I should never have trusted him."
"Again, its your perogative." Sophie told her, sounding very matter of fact. Hallie brushed up against the wall with her hand and steadied herself up.
"I should go." she told Sophie, "Thank you for, well, eavesdropping."
"Oh, anytime." she replied with a wink. Hallie sighed. One more thing bothered her. Something Dom had asked her before he left. Perhaps this was what angered her the most that Billy hadn't told her. Walking away, Hallie headed to her board room. It was obvious there would be no more rehearsal the rest of the night and she was in desperate need of some sleep. First she'd get dressed and see her father. She owed him that.
But Dom's last words before he left haunted her. 'I wondered why you didn't come to me. I laid in that bed for almost a week waiting for you. But you never came. he began with an almost distant tone, He didn't even tell you about the overdose?
Hallie walked into her room and shut the door. But nothing could shut out tonight. Collapsing on her bed, Hallie broke out into heavy sobs, the kind that made your whole chest heave and your breath catch short. How could a few simple decisions ruin a life so much? Hallie let out a loud cry. Could the past ever be fixed?
