Shore Leave 28: The Smell of Con!
This convention found crickwooder, threnodyjones and myself right in the dead center of Geek Funk! Our company on this trip was none other then Amanda Tapping (SG1), Carmen Argenziano (SG1), Corin Nemec (SG1), William Schallert (ST:TOS), Connor Trinneer (SGA). With inconsistent timings causing mass confusion for con goers by none other then Jamie Bamber. (I don’t know if it was his schedule or something but all of his things Q&A’s, Photo Ops & Autographs were totally separate from everyone else’s which was a bad thing.)
We got to check in on Friday a bit later then usual. We found that this allowed more dealers to be set up and a few actors signing at their tables. I took the opportunity to get Carmen Argenziano’s autograph early because I worried that he would be swamped on Saturday. While there I got my first taste of geek moments when a fan was telling “Jacob” how wonderful a character he is and the quality of his work is outstanding. And did you know here in the US they play re-runs on the Sci-Fi channel? Yes! And she always makes sure she watches his episodes. He then leaned over and kissed her cheek of course she said “can I have a hug without the table in the way?” to which he agreed. At which point I am thinking that’s a bit over the top. He kissed your ass and now you want more? She did not want to buy a picture telling the woman it was too expensive! Still, not to bad. Of course we then had to listen to the people behind up complain that they brought a picture to sign and that it would still be $20 was not fair. But they paid it anyway. I think what some of the younger con people do not realize is this is how actors make money in-between projects. The character of Jacob Carter got him money per episode not a salary. Ah anyway.
We then went to The Still. I had a really good time and there was a lot of laughing. We got lucky and our waitress was wonderful. I also felt that threnodyjones did not need the butter. Seems while she was sitting across from me, knife in hand waiting I passed it right on by her. Terrible faux paux on my part, but set up a good few days worth of jokes honestly. We all had a good laugh and I promised threnodyjones on her next visit, she would get butter.
Saturday we got a bit of a late start over all. It was not enough to make us late for any events just later then we normally would have gone. But once there we got to see Carmen Argenziano (SG1) & Corin Nemec’s (SG1), Q & A which was fun and lead to Carmen talking about how in this line of work they were a bunch of Gypsy’s and need to be able to move from one place to another with no resentment. I found that thought very deep or it could have just been the way he expressed it. But it was very thought provoking. Corin is also a very fun guy and will make fun of himself or others you know the usual. They did not have a lot of screen time together but still were able to agree with the same types of things. Mainly how the SG1 people will treat you and how things are in order there to make the actors life much easier for you. The fun part was at the end of the Q & A Amanda Tapping (SG1) just came on out to tell them not to run over their time. They posed for some pictures together here and there and then they left her to her Q & A. Most of my impression of her Q & A was not about the show, she really didn’t give many spoilers or anything like that. But was more on the fact that she was so pleasant and fun and she kept joking that black op’s people would come out and take her away if she gave away too much or said the wrong thing because we all know the gate isn’t real - or is it? But still she was very kind and gracious and just sweet. I’ve seen others who are all over the place saying this thing or that but she was very personal saying a few times “it never use to be all about my boobs but then I had kids”. She asked people to ask her about the 200th episode tomorrow and matched the winning bid at the charity auction. They were bidding on “A’panda Tapping”. We then went to the dealers room for a bit and over to Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger! (Where more food fun ensued) before lining up for autographs. Which was fun because Amanda was so tired you could see it in her face just how tired she really was and I asked if Jay could take her picture she looked all down as she said “sure” but then flashed this smile that was wonderful! It was truly an actor at work there. We were all impressed by it. Connor Trinneer (SGA) let us take his picture right after he put Afrin up his nose because he was feeling bad. It was really hot in the hotel on Saturday to say the least. And people were getting a bit ripe! A few times I was fanning myself just to keep some fresh air around for sure.
Sunday we found ourselves back at the Q & A’s and again much of the above happened. We saw some fan shaped people for sure. One woman I will point out was nicknames Jabba the Slut. Here is why, she had to weigh at least 450 - 500 pounds and she was wearing clothes made for a 200 pounder. She had her belly hanging out her leg fat hanging out. It was not pretty. And while, more power to her to be that confident and wear that clothing give the rest of us a break - please?! Also we found out that on Saturday they stopped Amanda signing at 700 (does not surprise me because we got finished with her line at 6:30pm and we were in the 100 - 200 range. I think she needed sleep. So that pushed us back for out autographs but!!! We found a nice little cubby hole so I got to print out new pictures for actors to sign that were taken at the Q & A’s that morning. William Schallert (ST:TOS) was really impressed that I had his photo ready to sign. And Connor Trinneer was all like “you’ve got me looking sick!” And Amanda “Wow, that was yesterday!” I think the cool part for Jay was that others were getting pictures he took signed.

While of course the con was going on it seems that I did loose lady_hotaru as a journal friend because her journal was taken down. But in a quick update, it looks like she is back! Yeah!
While I try and do my best to include all things, the personal stuff just does not translate well to a fun con entry. Explaining a burping contest is just not something I can do and make it sound like you should have been there. So while I hope you enjoy the report I wanted to explain why there is a lack of jokes or the stuff that made all of us laugh all weekend long.
