Haunted

Very scary dream last night, though I wouldn't call it a nightmare. It didn't wake me up, but it was thoroughly creepy. It still creeps me out now. I have goosebumps as I write this.

I am visiting an old house. The paint is worn off and the house is grey, like rotting wood that's been weathered by 100 years of wind and rain. There are ancient shutters and loose shingles. The small yard is fitting, with gnarled trees, and dead grass. The house is evil, or is at least inhabited by evil. The house gives the impression that nobody could possibly live there, but people do. I'm visiting the house. It belongs to my relatives. My sister and I are on vacation in England and we're staying in the house.

There's a little girl with auburn hair living in the house, my cousin. I can't remember her name. She's seriously disturbed and communicates with the ghosts. Her mother, my aunt, is probably the cause of her torment. The girl was neglected as a young child. The dream contains flashes of her past. Her childhood is sad and full of demons. Her mother is more disturbed than she is. She has powers, or at least commands the spirits. She makes a pan of oil bubble and froth madly, simply by pointing her finger and by uttering words which I can't understand. They both mutter to themselves in a language I can't identify, and talk to the ghosts by name.

My cousin seems to have it out for me. She offers me a stick, I don't know why, but in the spirit of being a good older cousin, I accept it. She pushes it down into my hands, and I can feel a force that is not my own pushing it back up. She laughs maniacally, and I know that she's passed her demons to me. I try to give her back the stick, but she won't take it.

I see a lot of strange things in the house, but nothing that has any form. It's all swirling mist, fleeting shadows, and glimpses of something that refuses to be seen. I don't know that there's something there, I can't see it, but I can FEEL it.
