Kris Allen stared down at his test in dismay. Another F, just the thing he wanted to bring home to his mother. He knew she’d be disappointed…but he did study a lot. But the subject of history wasn’t very appealing to him. He snuck a glance at his best friend Adam Lambert and he just knew Adam had aced the test. He had that ‘I’m the best thing ever’ smirk plastered all over his face. Just then the bell rang and Kris gathered his books and threw them into his bag. He just didn’t have the heart to organize everything like usual.
“Hey there Kris!” He heard Adam call. “So, how’d you do on the test?”
Kris stopped in his tracks and waited for his best to catch up. Adam was over six foot tall so it was hard to ignore him sometimes. And his blue-black hair and stunning blue eyes stood out in the crowd. “I flunked it. Mom’s gonna have a field day!”
Adam gave him a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry about it. Next time, just study with me. I guess we shouldn’t have stopped the tutor lessons. What’s your mom making for dinner tonight?”
Kris smiled back. No matter how much of a bad mood he was in, Adam always cheered him up. “I think Allison’s stopping by…so probably pepperoni rolls and mac n’ cheese. You know mom loves to spoil her.”
“Awesome…your mom hasn’t made that dish in forever! Is Allison the only one stopping by?” Adam asked.
“Yeah…the others from the musical group are all busy today. You know mom loves them to death.” Kris answered with a small sigh.
“Of course…your mom can’t hate anyone!” Adam joked.
“Shows what you know. She barely-oof.” Just then some ran into Kris and sent him flying to the floor. Adam glared at the jock who dared to knock Kris to the floor. The boy just kept going on, not offering to help Kris up.
“One of these days I’m gonna pay them back for doing that shit to you.” Adam swore as he helped Kris up. Most of the teenagers in the school were used to Kris being bullied and paid no mind to it anymore.
“Don’t worry about it.” Kris said as he adjusted himself. “One day, they’ll meet someone bigger and stronger than them…and then get what’s coming to them.”
“Ahhhh…wonderful karma.” Adam sighed. “Never really worked for me. People are still going on about me.”
“And like I said…only the people who are important to you opinions’ should matter.” Kris replied.
“Well…here’s my stop kid. I’ll see you after the last bell right?” Adam asked hopefully.
Kris grinned. “Of course…mom would die if you missed tonight. You know how she is.”
The two teenagers looked at one another and laughed. Adam ducked into the classroom and Kris kept going forward to his own class. His only thoughts were of Adam and how unfairly he was treated because of his sexuality. Kris never had a problem with it. Of course…he’d always suspected Adam of being homosexual. He just went along with it and stayed friends with Adam. Kris knew they wouldn’t be cut a break in this little Arkansas town. Adam was too flamboyant and Kris…well…he was the geek. And it seemed that the standard rule was that he be bullied on a daily basis. He knew the cycle would stop when he got out of the one horse town. The only problem he was facing…was leaving Adam behind.
