Happiness is Costco!

I just had my first trip to Osaka's Costco and left with a crapload of lovely, lovely stuff: fruit granola, pita bread, albacore in water (not oil!!), garlic pita chips, tomato sauce, mini Crunch bars for my kid's Halloween week, and most importantly sharp cheddar cheese. Mmmmmmm!
I am however quite depressed at the fact that I could not find ( Read more... )

do you have a blender or access to one? hummus is really easy to make and i'd suspect the ingredients are even available in japan

2-3 cans cooked garbanzo beans (aka chick peas)
salt, pepper to taste
2-3 cloves garlic
olive oil
lemon juice
h2o
sesame tahini (if you can find it; not necessary)

throw drained & rinsed garbanzos, garlic, a couple of tsps of oil and an equal amount of lemon juice plus 2-3 tsp of tahini if you've got it into the blender; mix until smoothe adding h2o as needed in small amounts until you've got the desired consistency, add salt & pepper to taste during final blending... store in fridge in a tightly sealed container and it'll keep for 3-4 weeks

Awesome recipe!!

Alas, I can't find chickpeas over here (so far!) and also I have no blender. I suppose I can get someone to send me a couple of cans and hand mash it or just spend the outrageous amounts to get it at a restaurant... *sigh*

Where's Costco in Osaka, and do you need to have a membership card? I'd love to buy some food from home.

Yep, you need a membership card (I went with another teacher, and it's 4200 yen/year) and it's in Amagasaki, a long walk away from the JR line. I just cabbed it with two other people for under 1000 yen.
