Chris†on Cafe: everything you ever wanted from a church at dinnertime

Sep 06, 2008 21:33

Imagine a restaurant themed as a "church": with gaudy images of Christ on his cross, frescoed ceilings of cherubs, glittering glass chandeliers(?!), tall multicolored candles, and hints of bright scarlet red on chairs, napkins, and table settings. I welcome you to Umeda's Chris†on Cafe.
roadragebunny and I made a trip to Umeda to check out the Mandarake there (alas, too little too late as it closed at 8) but found ourselves in a shopping arcade looking up at a stone facade. We walk in, add our names to the list, and in around 20 mins. got settled in to our nook on the 3rd floor of the place, overlooking the first floor diners and the great shiny chandelier.
After taking a look at the menu we decide on spring rolls, some form of grilled cheesy chicken (Paul), and mushroom risotto (me) to be washed down by a banana choco shake (Paul) and iced darjeeling tea (me).
I must confess that the food there was excellent! Much better than I though it'd be! While I wasn't a huge fan of the spring rolls Paul loved them (I didn't like the ham inside but everything else about it was good), his chicken was really tender and tasty and my risotto came to me by a waitress who lit the thing on fire in front of me melting a huge slab of butter into the ricey mix. It was delicious!! I'll add in that Paul's shake was seriously chocolatey and had chucks of banana at the bottom and my darjeeling was quite decent though full of ice. Ah well. The portions were on the smallish side and the price was a little high but that's to be expected at this type of restaurant.
Overall I give this place an enthusiastic 8/10. I'd make it 9/10 if there were actual pews to eat at. Oh well. Can't have everything.
