A few weeks ago when I saw joanna newsom live, she played her new album, Ys, in it's entirety. While listening, I loved it and knew the album would be great.. but now that we've bought it and have had the chance to *really* listen and pull it apart... it is SERIOUSLY a masterpiece.
there are five songs on there, each at least 10 minutes long (sometimes much more!) and they are each like an epic story or fable filled with versus that will cloud your mind with images of rivers, countrysides, animals, oceans, milk, sparrows, thistles, and herbs.
please, please... give it a listen.
my personal favorite song on there is called "monkey and bear" a love story between two animals who are escaping a carnival or zoo but the bear has a beautiful, unusual secret.
