At the camp the teens evaluate their lives, assess their family life and discuss what they need to do to make necessary changes in their lives.

Camp goals are helping children to learn responsibility and to have more respect for their parents, school and community, Grotte said. Participants also develop a stronger sense of accountability for their actions and choices.

Counseling there includes one-on-one sessions with adult counselors and listening to speakers.

Teens are required to be ready for camp work by 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. They have a rigorous exercise routine, which includes a team-building obstacle course before breakfast is eaten. They also do tasks such as chopping and stacking wood, cleaning the dining hall, washing dishes and painting buildings.

In the pilot camp she worked at, Grotte said she was impressed with the attitude turnaround of participants and their goal setting.

The camp is followed by educational sessions for children and parents to attend. The sessions encourage teens to implement the values that were stressed at the camp. Parents are provided information from speakers on effective parenting skills and how to be more active in their children's lives.
