Very interested in this (also interested in seeing the storms of posts trying to claim "The Naked Time" and "The Trouble With Tribbles").
Quick question - would it be allowed to claim TNG/VOY/DS9/ENT canon in this? Not bringing in characters, I'm thinking more... when certain episodes are revisited by TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT (Specifically "Trials and Tribbulations" and whatever episode of ENT it was that matched with The Tholian's Web") would it be alright to have throwaway mentions to certain canon created there? Like "Keptin, we haff detected four unconfirmed stowaways in ze Enterprise" but not much else for when reboot!DS9 crew appear?
Also, book canon. Certain characters are fleshed out through novels - is the canon there free to exploit?
That's a great question! You can feel free to mention or allude to any outside canon you wish, books or comics or the Animated Series or whatever. If you're doing Space Seed you can reference what more we find out about Khan in "Wrath of Khan", etc. I imagine there'll be a lot of liberties taken with the episodes-- the challenge is to remix, not rewrite-- so you can certainly go ahead and add any characters, aliens, things, etc. that you wish, as long as the fic follows all the rules. :D
This is probably a totally stupid question with an obvious answer but I'm asking anyway: we are open to slashy interpretations of the episodes, yes? Is there a rating limit for what we're supposed to be writing? I just hate to write up a bunch of tribble porn only to learn that I'm doing it wrong.
LMAO no, there is absolutely no rating and you can write whatever ship you want into the fic. (personally i'm hoping whoever takes 'city on the edge of forever' turns it into a kirk/spock shack-up pornfest, but hey, that's just me. XD)
You've said not to worry about TOS canon - I'm assuming we can also forget that Chekov wasn't around for Season 1? So if someone is writing a S1 fic they can have him in there if they want?
As far as keeping the plot the same goes, how strict should we keep to the plot? For instance, I've got my eye on The Paradise Syndrome, but I want to strand Kirk on the planet withOUT amnesia. Would that still be kosher?
this is kind of a 'your mileage may vary' situation-- it's sort of in your hands what you do with your episode, and we definitely don't want to pigeonhole anyone away from ideas. my feeling is basically if we can still recognize the fic as being a remix of the episode, you're good, so changing a key detail is fine, but changing six key details probably isn't. does that help?
it looks like the same style as this one, so maybe it's the same maker? you can check out her journal, she has a ton of TOS icons posted. XD (and that one is fantastic too, lol. yay geekery.)
Sorry, I've got to ask .. do you plan to open the claiming post in - let's say - the next hour or so? If not I could safe my fingers from pressing F5 every two seconds and go back to writing my essay.
