So, okay.
In all seriousness, I have a lot to be grateful for.
This is the best holiday we've seen since 80% of my family memebers started dropping dead. The comparison between this year and last is amazing. Mom actually helped me cook, do you believe it? She got out of bed and helped cook. Granted, most of the food came from the food bank, but last year she hung out in bed and cried. I feel very fortunate to have had a proper dinner. It's really the little things.
She's doing a lot better, by the way. We met with a lawyer last night, and I did most of the talking, but I think it did her a world of good anyway. Being told she didn't do anything wrong is the validation she's been craving. She's alert, affable, even happy. This further convinces me her "condition" is mostly situational, but I'll take anything I can get. The reprieve is priceless. I may well marry her attorney for this.
School is going remarkably well. If I can cajole prof Hudson into a little forgiveness of circumstance, I'll have a perfect semester. I've been invited to join the honors program because, apparently, we've stepped into the fifth dimension. I've never done this well before. My academics took a nose dive in fourth grade and never really recovered, but I think living on campus has made every difference.
The distance has been great for mom, too, actually. She's learning to function independently for the first time while I nurture something resembling a social life, which is.. awesome. We've been getting along a lot better, and my god, I was actually happy to come home for the holiday. Money's still woefully tight, of course, and we have to scrape for things most people take for granted, but we have what we need, and I feel blessed.
Tell me what's good in your lives, flist. What should you be grateful for?
