Background: I belong to a bookclub comprised of five married couples plus two singles. While the ages of group members varies from mid 40s to over 70, most members hover around 60 years old.
Last night we discussed Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. One of the men in the group did not like the book and saw no purpose to reading it (he was alone in this opinion). He stated that he understood oppression. Ha! Anyway. I will be recommending books for discussion in a few months. I think I want to "push" reading one of Sheri Tepper's book to allow this particular male to see what the oppression described in Reading Lolita in Tehran (as well as other books), might look like if done to men. The ones I've read are:
- Gate to Women's Country
- Family Tree
- Grass
- Beauty
What do you think? Should I recommend one of these? If so, which one would provide good reading and discussion. Are there other authors/books that I should consider?
