I'm in the process of making a trés funky costume from "Phantom of the Opera", namely this one:
The stage costumes are closed in the back, some with zippers, some with hooks and eyes (+velcro). Problem is tha I want the closing to be in front, both because is's so much easier to put the dress on myself (I've finally realized that I lack a maid.....) and because I see it as more historical correct. Not that this is a historical correct costume, but it has strong historical references I'd like to keep when possible.
My plan is to make the bodice like a short jacket with a flounced bottom (will be decorated with lace), with an A opening in front being closed over a stomacher (I believe the correct term is a "pierrot jacket"). The US versions of this costume has short "jacket" bodices, and I think that corresponds very well with the costume design. However, the US costumes are closed in the back with a zipper, and as mentioned I want mine front closed. So what to do? I've cut it down to two options:
1. Make a "corset" with the stomacher as a decorative front. The bodice will be closed over the corset in the manner of this 1780 dress:

CONS: How well will the bodice stay in place? Do I need to attach it further than just over the bust? I've always assumed this is why this style was popular with a decorative belt in the waist.....
2. Keep the stomacher as a separate item, and pin/hook it to the bodice (like a Robe a la Francaise) each time I wear the dress
PROS: Also historical examples of it being a plausible style. Easier to adjust the size.
CONS: Harder to get it to fit right? Will it tug and twist, or stay in place?
Comments or adivces?
The progress on the dress is slow.... This is because I have to cut the black lace (for multiple flounced layers) to the shape I want, and them sew it on to the peach fabric with zig-zag seams. So far I have completed two cuffs and (almost) the stomacher. But as soon as I figure out how I want the bodice to be, I think the progress will be a lot quicker.
