a/n: i was flipping through the prompt generator (which is always bad, because then i start writing ugh) and then i quickly read something that was about, like, walls? gates? whatever. it inspired me. not the jongyu oneshot i was planning on writing, but...shorter and probably more enjoyable? haha.
The first thing Jonghyun texted Jinki that morning was "clear sky today." Jinki rubbed his eyes precariously and glanced down at the too-bright screen, eyes unable to make out the jumbled letters until he blinked, "Oh." His fingers slowly tapped the keys to respond.
"i'll text you later, breakfast now. cya" was the reply he got after a few minutes of welcomed silence, and Jinki shrugged his shoulders, slipped on his socks and tried his best to walk down the stairs, not stumble down them.
When he got to school, he was greeted by smiles and great chatter, Jonghyun's smiling eyes and lopsided grin. "So?"
"So what?" Jinki echoed, his eyes glazed from fatigue.
"Will you?"
Jinki's narrowed eyes met Jonghyun's warm stare, and his heart melted a bit under the sun. "Jonghyun, you have to learn to be more specific. That's why you're failing writing right now."
Exasperated, his friend threw his arms up in the air. "Don't you ever read my texts?"
"Texts?" Jinki murmured under his breath, hand shooting into his pocket to rummage about. "What t-oh." Jonghyun scoffed. After scanning the few messages, a small smile spread its way across Jinki's lips, and he nodded. "Sure, why not?"
Jonghyun beamed, and JInki liked the way the sunlight got caught on his hair, his eyelashes, the bridge of his nose and cheekbones.
"Great."
Jinki tucked the duffel bag under his arm, twisted the doorknob with much difficulty before a cold breeze hit his arms, equalized only by Jonghyun's wide grin. They nodded at each other once, each hopping onto a bike of his own, and then took the streets for the night.
But when Jonghyun made a sharp right, Jinki wasn't ready, his unsteady feet barely catching the ground to stop himself from going down the block alone. Jonghyun gave Jinki a speculating glance, brow cocked, and Jinki returned the gesture with more confusion than anything.
"Aren't we-"
"But the shorter way is-"
Stopping, Jinki drummed his finger along the rubber handles. "Jjong, where are we going?"
The brunet blinked once, twice, as if he was the stupid one-his grades would like to say otherwise-and then he responded, "To school."
Jinki paled. "Wait, what?"
"School, Jinki. Your most favorite place in the world." Jonghyun smiled through his snippy remark and Jinki rolled his eyes, still not comprehending. "Didn't you get the text?"
Cold fingers ran themselves up and down the sides of his face as he roughly sighed, "I was studying. I had to turn it off." Jonghyun pouted at the ground. "How're we going to get into the school anyway? Let's just go up there." He pointed a finger down the barren street to the collection of streetlights that outlined the pathway up to the small park on the town's hill.
Jonghyun waved his hand about, muttering, "There's nowhere to sit. We can't see anything. Trust me, I know what to do." His reassuring smile wasn't as reassuring as Jinki had hoped it would have been, but he kicked back three times on his heels so his front wheel was aligned with the back of Jonghyun's bike. He smiled a small smile, and the brunet grinned back. Jinki always had a hard time saying no to that.
They threw their bikes down onto the soft grass behind a couple of trees, and when Jonghyun turned around with his finger held up to his lip, Jinki stiffened. There was bound to be some sort of security around the gates, and hopping it was nearly impossible. He knew that Jonghyun definitely lacked the height.
"Come here," said boy whispered harshly from behind a bush, but Jinki couldn't spot him, and panic ran through his veins. "Not there, here, you dumb ass." A stark white hand caught his attention and Jinki let out a great sigh, jogged over to the spot and knelt beside his friend.
"There's a stump. We have to get on that and hop over." His eyes were smiling under the spotty moonlight. "Think you can do that?"
Jinki snorted. "I'm the one who does high jump on track, doofus."
Jonghyun caught his bottom lip with a jutting tooth and cracked a grin, "True." And then he wordlessly jumped over the gate with a small bend of his knees.
Jinki followed suit before his leg got caught on a branch and he flailed about, almost falling on top of Jonghyun.
"That duffel's going to kill you, Jinki," Jonghyun commented as he approached the ladder leading up to the school roof. He breathed in sharply and took an icy rung in his hands, wincing. "Okay, this was a bit different during fourth period."
Grumbling, Jinki stood close behind him, his hands busily wringing the strap of the bag over his shoulder. "Hurry up, Jjong." A leg nudged him in the ass for effect, and Jonghyun squawked before heaving himself up.
They slowly made their way up the ladder despite the chilly breeze that hindered them in their steps, and when Jonghyun reached the top, he tumbled onto the ground and howled, "Finally!" Jinki clumsily set his duffel bag on the ground and stretched his legs out before him, hands running through his mussy hair.
"Never doing that again."
Jonghyun smiled into a cold, frostbitten hand. His gaze remained on Jinki's face for a while before his eyes flickered upward, and one finger uncurled itself to point. "Look."
Bitterly the boy looked up, his hard glare softening when the soft twinkle of stars put him under the mysterious spell that could only belong to the power of the cosmos (and Jonghyun's smile, but they fell in the same category). He let out a long sigh.
"Beautiful, right?" Jonghyun kicked his feet out and folded his hands behind his head, leaning back onto the cold, uncomfortable granite. He shifted a bit until his shoulder blades weren't aching as much, and he breathed in softly.
Jinki looked down at the brunet, the dancing stars reflected in his glassy eyes, with his fingers fumbling with the drawstring of the duffel bag. Pulling out two compressed sleeping bags, he threw one on top of Jonghyun's stomach, earning a small grunt of thanks in response. "Don't catch a cold."
Their eyes were glued to the sky, following each sparkle and twinkle that was visible, the afterimage of an explosion so beautiful, so long ago. The bright, full moon battled with his brothers for the spotlight, each shine brighter than the last. Jinki couldn't help but chuckle, his airy laugh cutting through the thick silence and startling Jonghyun in his spot.
"I was out here during lunch when you were talking to Mrs. Hong yesterday. I asked the girl if it was gonna rain tonight, and she said it'd be clear, just like this," the brunet breathed, fingers finally unlacing and drumming on his stomach instead. "I knew I could trust her."
Jinki, twisting his body to face Jonghyun for the first time, smiled into the palm of his hand. "So how'd you assume that this would be the best place for stars?"
He watched Jonghyun visibly tense in the frigid air, but he pressed for an answer, eyes wide and quizzical.
"I uh-I asked my mom."
Blinking, Jinki scratched his nose. "Really?"
"Yeah. She said that, uh, my dad took her here for their anniversary during high school. It was the best night of their lives." Jonghyun paused. "Well, no, my birthday was." Jinki snorted with a roll of his eyes. His smirk softened to a shy grin as he repositioned his arms, one folder under his head and the other bent before him.
"That's nice," he commented through a quiet yawn.
Smiling, Jonghyun laughed, "Yeah, right?" Distractedly, his eyes shot up to the moon and back to Jinki's, and Jinki wondered how long it would take to travel to the moon in a space shuttle with Jonghyun by his side. He assumed time would fly with them. "They had their first kiss here, too."
A familiar blush-Jonghyun did this often, his words like silk and always the best to hear-dusted Jinki's cheeks and the roaring in his ears was almost enough to block his thinking as his eyes fluttered shut and their bated breaths mixed. But then his eyes snapped open just as Jonghyun's nose was about to brush his, and he snapped, "Your parents lived in America before moving here."
Jonghyun's eyes widened a fraction as realization hit-having the town mayor's son for your boyfriend lacked its perks-and he quickly stammered under his breath, "Yeah, but. I mean. Uh." He chose to ignore the raised brows and mumbled, "Well, it almost worked."
"Almost," Jinki smirked before turning his head away to face the sky. His peace was invaded by Jonghyun's big pout, his lower lip jutted out perfectly to draw out the affection and love. Jinki sighed heavily, ran a hand through his hair, then looked Jonghyun in the eyes. "I never said that it didn't."
"So?"
"So what?" Jonghyun punched his arm lightly for the obvious mocking tone in his voice. "I'm serious, you have to get specific here."
Jonghyun exhaled. "Will you kiss me?"
It was enough to embarrass Jinki beyond his wits, the begging eyes and tinted cheeks and ears, and he grumbled something softly into the crook of his arm, catching Jonghyun's attention almost instantly. "What was that?" Jinki grumbled some more. "Come on, speak up."
"Fine." His reply was louder in the silence than he had hoped, and Jonghyun's incredulous smile under the full, boisterous moon was more distracting than he had expected it to be, because he almost flinched when Jonghyun's full lips, still curled up in happiness, pressed against his. Jinki almost lost sight of the night sky as he blinked, the pops and sparks behind his eyelids providing enough imagery to last through the kiss.
He sighed as they pulled away for a breath of cold, crisp air, and his watery eyes met Jonghyun's, the infinite words in them running endlessly through his heart and mind. A small nod was all he could muster before Jonghyun kissed him again, eyes shut, hands busily unzipping the sleeping bags. His legs went in first, knees knocking clumsily against each other, and then Jonghyun pulled his whole body in the sleeping bag, a comfortable warmth filling the space between them. Lacing his fingers with long hair, Jonghyun pushed forward to deepen the kiss, to make Jinki's head spin in the most confusing ways.
Jinki was never fond of such a close proximity, of intimacy to this level, but when Jonghyun's hand clasped his, the long fingers pushing through his own for some sort of reassurance, Jinki let the worry go with a sharp hiss of breath. Jonghyun's lips never left his, their hands were always interlocked, and there was never an insufficient circulation of heat through the sleeping bag, under his skin.
And Jinki felt his heart take off without countdown.
They clumsily pedaled on their bikes, past curfew, past the time when cars made quiet strolls around the streets, and their quiet laughter left tracks along the road. Whispers were exchanged as were goofy smiles and muffled snickers. Jonghyun daringly steered in close enough to gently press kisses against Jinki's neck, his ear, his nose, while all Jinki could do was hope his hands wouldn't slip off the handles and cause him to fall through a sewer gate and into his doom.
"So," Jinki finally said as he rested the bike against the side of his house, "that was nice."
"It was." Jonghyun kicked at a patch of grass with his heel, eyes everywhere but on Jinki's face.
The boy silently walked up to him, arms tense and fingers twitching in the cold. When his finger pads lightly touched his chest, Jonghyun gasped sharply. Their lips met one more time, the kiss a bit more desperate than the last, tongues pressing, testing, until Jinki released his vice grip on the front of Jonghyun's sweater. Jonghyun pressed another quick kiss for an end, and he stepped back into his bike. He mouthed, "Good night," and Jinki smiled, "Sleep tight."
Jinki watched from the living room window as Jonghyun pedaled down the street, his gait a bit wobbly, and the stars that spelled out the unspoken words lit the road, brighter than the street lamps, brighter than the moon. And Jinki thanked the stars before going upstairs to sleep.
