campfire song song
jinki x jonghyun , romance / humor , pg , 2150w
it's another one of jonghyun's crazy ideas.

a/n: so finally...the first replay4japan fic.  for intoxicatedbrat . i apologize, over and over, for being so slow with this.  i've spent months and months toiling over these stories, honestly.  near completion, i would start all over again because i thought it was lacking.  i hope they don't prove to be a disappointment, though!  thank you so much for being patient with me, and i can only wish that i could have given this to you earlier, or could have presented a better piece.

jinki is woken up rather harshly from a lovely dream-of nice beaches, tanned skin and talking dolphins-by an unnerving crash, and when he opens his eyes against the morning sun's harsh rays, he's not pleased with what he sees.

not at all.

"jonghyun," he barely manages to croak as he sways left and right from his upright position against the headboard.  the aforementioned boy is doubled over in a corner of jinki's room, ass in the air and hands busily rummaging through clothing.  "jonghyun, what are you doing in my room?"

the younger boy doesn't reply, only digs further into the heap of supposedly clean laundry (kibum hadn't yelled at him to clean up, so jinki hadn't bothered to).  jinki clears his throat, set on giving jonghyun a piece of his mind, when suddenly jonghyun stands up, turns around and presents to him the most offending piece of clothing in jinki's wardrobe.  a pair of cute pink elephant boxers, with a trunk for.  well.

"it was a gift," jinki whines, but jonghyun's howling laughter drowns him out anyway, and jinki just wraps himself in his blankets again.  if all jonghyun is going to do is pilfer through his belongings and come up with an entire repertoire of jokes and mean comments to use against the older in the future, well, jinki thinks, let him to his heart's content.

so jinki goes back to sleep in hopes that the next time he wakes up, he'll wake to the smell of fried eggs and not early jogging sweat.

well, almost.

"hyung, come on," taemin laughs, tugging impatiently at jinki's arm from under the covers.  it still smells like sweat, but at least taemin's strawberry shampoo is strong enough to repel the wall of manly musk.  "we're going to be late if you keep lazing around like this."

jinki isn't sure what part of him sleeping is lazing around (he thinks it's actually quite crucial to his livelihood, something he's been lacking as of late) because it's not like they have a schedule to follow on a sunday.  he opens his eyes, left then right, and stares tiredly at a lump of camouflage and poorly tied sacks.  jinki blinks.

minho walks in-or rather, saunters?  there's an odd step to his walk-and smiles brightly at the two still sitting on the bed.  "taemin, jinki hyung, the car's all packed.  we should get going now."  taemin nods before hopping off the side of the bed and pointing at what jinki makes out to be bags filled to the brim with god knows what, occupying the space where his pile of clothes had been hours before.

jinki doesn't even have time to ask what the hell is going on before kibum comes stomping in and, with a mouth full of listerine mouthwash, starts flailing his arms and pointing some rude fingers, finishing it all off with an indignant huff and a march back out.

jinki's not sure what any of this means, but he picks up his shit and carefully follows taemin to avoid getting sprayed with soft mint (with vanilla) mouthwash in the eyes.

when they pass by the third goat along the road, jinki feels like it's about time to ask his question.

it comes out as a simple "what."  but jonghyun turns around knowingly from the front seat and holds up a victory sign, smiles cheekily.  "camping trip."

camping trip.  jinki tosses the words back and forth in his head.  camping trip.

well, it could be worse.

(that is, until they almost run into a deer and veer so far off the road they actually spend two hours trying to get the van out of the ditch.)

"it's beautiful!" jonghyun declares, because no one else has the heart to say something better.

it's actually not bad, jinki thinks, save for the two hornet's nests he spots in a tree not to far from their camping site.  it's quaint, the patch of land slightly cleared for people to settle and stargaze.  taemin and minho chatter excitedly as they set up the tents next to each other, kibum organizes the cans of food and beverages they brought, and jonghyun does nothing, only stands on a large log adjacent to the pile of logs that was there before they had come.

"you know, you could help," jinki finds himself saying as he drops an armful of dry wood into the heap.  smiling, jonghyun turns to face him.

"do you like it, hyung?"

it?  jinki shrugs and looks away.  "i didn't even know we were going camping."  the older boy frowns.  "when did we decide to go camping, anyway?"

jonghyun laughs quietly, yet it sounds loud and clear in the open woods.  "we talked about it a few days ago, remember?  we said we wanted to do something outside."

with a small shrug, jinki sits on the log by jonghyun's feet.  "i thought you wanted to go on a picnic or something, not," jinki waves his hand around, "camping."

the vocalist doesn't reply and instead steps down from the log, a big smile on his face.  jinki isn't sure what to make of it as he tilts his head to look at jonghyun from the side.  suddenly the younger boy looks back up at him.  his eyes are as clear as the cloudless sky stretched above them.

"isn't this nice, though?"  jonghyun picks up a pebble and stares at it.  "we can do a lot out here.  and it's nice and quiet."

nice.  it is, jinki thinks, as his eyes close on their own accord, and his ears ring in the overwhelmingly soft melody of gentle breezes and crunching leaves, and his palms tingle against the cool, rough surface of the wood underneath him.  it is nice and quiet.

suddenly kibum shouts that dinner's ready! and they all scramble to the prepackaged sandwiches and boxed juices, loud laughs and simple songs filling the forest around them.

taemin whines rather loudly as minho throws some bait at him and smirks.  "why do we have to fish when we already have food?"

"that's the spirit, taeminnie," jonghyun jokes, though when he sees kibum's rather dark face, he shuts up.  "you have to fish when you go camping, it's the rules."  taemin snorts in disbelief and glares warily at the can of worms by his feet.  gross.

"i'm not sure about this."  jinki gingerly picks up the thin wire between two fingers, afraid he might cut himself.  minho, on the other hand, already has a trout flopping about in his hands, and he's wearing the hugest, cockiest grin jinki has ever seen him muster.  unamused, kibum only kicks the minho's bucket of water into the river.

jonghyun squats by jinki on the large boulder that the oldest had marked his when they approached the bank.  he smiles too, hair clipped back by one of taemin's bunny hair clips.  "do you know how to fish, jinki?"

jinki only shrugs.  he's tried bobbing for ducks with the magnetic fishing poles, but that's about it.  "then i'll teach you how," jonghyun says, and he gets up, looms over jinki like a tall mountain shielding him from the harsh sun.  jinki grins.

"all in the wrist."  jonghyun motions the action several times.  "and then you just toss it into the water, wait for a nibble, and yank."

that, jinki thinks, sounds a bit too easy, but he watches jonghyun easily throw the line into the water and pull out a small fish the size of jinki's palm with ease.  he applauds and jonghyun takes a bow before sliding the small fish back into the swirling currents.  jonghyun says, "now you try."

jinki grips the fishing pole, holds it over his shoulder, and then throws the line as far as he can.  he closes his eyes when he feels a yank, and then,

"hyung, that's my shirt!" minho exclaims, tugging on the line and sending jinki tumbling off the large boulder right into the water.

all he can hear when he bobs back up to the surface is jonghyun's howling laughter and taemin and key's mocking impersonations.  jinki smiles, finds minho's bucket, and throws water at anyone and everyone within his reach.

jinki thinks that the sound of crackling fire is the prettiest sound in the world, after their horrible round of campfire songs.  taemin just thinks that these s'mores are so fucking good.

"what was that?" minho says, smirking, though failing horribly with his lips glued shut by his own gooey mess.  jonghyun busily removes bits of chocolate from his hair and kibum sits quietly, still roasting his marshmallow, probably imagining it to be jonghyun's head after the rather unfortunate event involving fish guts and boxer shorts during dinner.  jonghyun still hasn't apologized, and probably won't in fear of getting his ass branded with kibum's name.

but eventually kibum speaks up, saying something like, he's tired and wants to head in soon.  taemin quickly bounds for the biggest tent and zips the door up, leaving a rather frustrated kibum outside.  "but my lotions are in there," kibum whines, and barely has a second to as taemin quickly unzips the tent, chucks a tub of hand cream at kibum, and zips it back up.  minho walks over and holds a marshmallow above the boy's burning head.

"are you going in?" jonghyun asks jinki, who lies on the ground, legs and arm spread out around him.  "or you can just sleep here."  when jinki doesn't move, jonghyun shuffles closer to their leader and plops down onto the dry, crunchy leaves.

"there are so many stars."

jonghyun looks up, craning his neck to look past the thick branches and green-black leaves.  "there are."

"it's beautiful," jinki says, "like we're actually in space."

a small hum and jonghyun shifts around, slowly leaning back to join jinki on the ground.  "ow!  how are you lying down like this?"  jonghyun squirms about before jinki's arm comes down to slap him on the chest.

"be quiet."  the older boy sighs and retracts his arm to fold his hands nicely on his stomach, eyes fluttering closed again.

it tickles, jinki suddenly thinks, annoyed.  like the stars are boring holes into his face.  but when jinki opens his eyes, it's just jonghyun, his round eyes that are as deep as the night sky.  just jonghyun smiling and staring at him and being jonghyun.

jinki shoves grass in his face.

"what was that for?" jonghyun pouts, throwing a stick at jinki in return.  but jinki gets up, ignoring jonghyun's invitation to duel.  "jinki."

"nothing," jinki says, and he knows his face is red, he knows his palms are sweaty, knows it's not the fire at fault.  he smiles at jonghyun's confused face (he really does resemble a puppy) and runs a hand through the younger boy's hair.  "you're ridiculous."

jonghyun laughs.  "yeah."  he pulls down on jinki's shirt and kisses jinki softly.

it's nice.

they become too engrossed, with their gentle kiss of pliant lips and playful tongues, that they don't notice the stinging, muffled smell of smoke.  it's only when jinki thinks it's getting really too warm for this weather (and they're not even kissing that hard) that he pulls away in confusion, looks down, and then screams.

"stop, drop and roll, hyung!  roll!  that way!"

"shut up, you two!"

(the sun is so bright in jinki's hair.  jonghyun smiles sleepily and shifts, drapes an arm over broad shoulders and buries his head in the soft mess of earth and warmth.)

kibum and jonghyun had made their amends over breakfast, and so they sit in the middle row of the car, literally glued side by side as they scroll through jonghyun's old text messages.  taemin has his head against jinki's shoulder, pulling back when jinki flinches for the fifth time.

"what's up, hyung?" taemin asks as he rubs his knees with the palms of his hand.  "getting old already?"

jinki snorts, slaps his hand down on taemin's shoulder.  "that's not it, you brat," he jokes, but a groan slips when he moves his shoulder again.  "i feel like i slept with a boulder on me or something."

jonghyun perks up in his seat and whips his head around to face the two in the back.  he rolls up his sleeve with a smirk.  "pure muscle, baby."

minho throws a half empty water bottle at the back of jonghyun's head.  jinki and taemin roll on top of each other in laughter as kibum yells at them to put their seat belts on.

"hey, jinki," jonghyun says a few minutes later with his head tilted back against the seat, eyes roaming all over jinki's face.  jinki feels more than self-conscious.  "how about the beach next time?"

jinki grins.  he plays with the hem of his shirt before glancing back up and seeing jonghyun's crooked smile plastered across his face, and he laughs.

"yeah, that'd be nice."

there was so much i could write about, because you said you just wanted fluffy jongyu haha.  i didn't really want to write a fic about them falling in love, but rather something where they already are in love.  so maybe it might be a bit anticlimatic, or not as fun.  and i guess it really has more of a general feel to it, but i hope you liked it anyway! ;~~;  if you want, i can definitely upload the high school au i wrote for you!  that one was a bit fluffier/more romantic haha.

i really really hope you enjoyed this.  and thank you again for being patient with me (if you hadn't forgotten already!) haha.  thank you so much ♡
