Character

Name: Rem Saverem
Fandom: Trigun (anime)
Gender: Female
Age: ~27
Time Period: Post-death
Wing Color: Red (the color of red geraniums :>)
History: here
Personality: At first glance, Rem doesn't seem much more than a what some would call a naive and kind person with a playful streak and an inclination toward nature. She has an adoration of flowers and plant-life, and has a distinct respect and love for life of all kinds that seems all too easy to pick up on with a conversation with her. She has no qualms talking about her philosophy and is cheerful about sharing it, enjoying smiling as much as she enjoys nurturing smiles on the faces of others by sharing her views.

She has something of an innate maternal streak which is forced to life when she rather unceremoniously finds herself the sole provider and caretaker for Vash and Knives (two sentient Plants discovered during a project to save humanity by colonizing other planets) as infants. The desire to foster and protect life assists her and is demonstrated in how well she nurtures their mutual respect and consideration not only for humanity, but their environment. She teaches the boys diligently on a variety of subjects and philosophies, attempting to instill a respect of life of all kinds, to appreciate everything from the simple to the great around them. Her gentle nature and teachings are reflected in Vash's all-encompassing need to protect people big and small even a century later.

She believes that all of man are intrinsically gifted with the desire to shape their own futures. No mistake is damning and long as we learn from our pasts, the future is always open and undecided. It's because of the influences of her husband, Alex, now deceased -- that she makes the choice to join the SEEDS project and try to aid in the furthering of mankind's future on another planet. He taught her to move beyond whatever personal failings she might see in herself and to become a better person from them, to stand on her own two feet -- teachings she continues to hold dear even after his death and help her to move on. It's because of this that she feels she's such a strong individual, even if she's still humble for it, understanding of and comfortable with herself to a level most of us would probably hope to achieve.

She is affectionate and teasing, warm in most conversation and a naturally happy person, rarely prone to a downcast expression even when the topic isn't always pleasant. "Sunny side up" would be an apt description of her persona -- and when combined with her natural determination, she makes for a good "pick-me-up" friend and maternal presence. She has a playful streak and doesn't mind joking around at all, having a good sense of humor and being generally hard to offend, but she can hold her own in a pinch and isn't at all afraid to stand up for what she believes.

However, Rem could be considered compassionate and trusting almost to a fault; when her crewmate, Rowen, is manipulated by Knives into a plot to see Steve, another crewmate, dead... Rowen nearly shoots Rem when the plot all unravels at his feet. When Rowen realizes what's happened, he points his gun at Knives -- but Rem is quick to jump in front of the pointer and approach him, softly attempting to talk him down despite the Captain imploring her to remove herself from the situation. The Captain was so convinced Rowen would pull the trigger despite Rem's protests, he ends up deploying the airlock and sucking Rowen into space before he can shoot Rem, to her abject horror. This also lends to her selfless nature; more than once, she's placed herself in a precarious situation for the good of another -- placing her body between herself and her crewmates when they first discover Vash and Knives as helpless infants under the gun, again when Rowen loses his head, and finally... when Knives alters the courses of their ships. It's Rem who sends the boys into the escape pod, and stays behind on the ship set to crash with the planet in order to try and salvage the navigation and save the other ships despite hers being on lock-down, imparting Vash with her final words of, "Take care of Knives."

Rem is attracted to like-minded people who respect life and has a particular soft spot for children. She is forgiving and accepting, but won't tolerate violence. She's a very protective and gentle presence who is sure to form fast bonds with softer spirits.

Strengths: While not particularly physically inclined, Rem is very emotionally stable an individual. It takes a LOT to shake her resolve, and she's very settled and firm in her beliefs and herself as a person. She is pretty much a rock -- even when things are going to hell around her, she doesn't crack under pressure as is witnessed and detailed in the example above regarding Rowen's breakdown.

She has proficiency with computers and technology considering the SEEDS project, as well as an education in biology and a good understanding of ecology and plant-life. It's safe to assume she is well educated to be selected for such an important position on the crew entrusted with mankind's colonization of a new planet.

Weaknesses: Again, as detailed above -- Rem's major flaw is the depth of her compassion and faith in the world and others. It can read as "naive" at times; she wants to believe everyone is capable of seeing past and growing from their mistakes and sins, when some people might not carry the resolve or inner strength necessary. She is something of a little reckless, especially when it comes to the safety and well-being of others, not afraid to put herself in harm's way for what she perceives to be the "greater good."

Samples

First Person: [there's a small pause, a faint ruffling of feathers -- someone is still adjusting to this rather momentous change to their anatomy, and with awe. then, a cheerful and warm voice is audible.]

If what I've read about this world is true... this is more than one wondrously long dream, isn't it? It's like some magnificent fairy tale! But I guess all of you are in the same boat as me one day or another, thinking the same sort of thing I am now...

Then we're sharing it together, aren't we? Characters in some tale greater than our imaginations! I'm eager to see what the future holds, for all of us.

Angels, protecting our dreams and our futures... Does that sound silly? I can't help but think that we've all been brought here for a reason... After all, how often are we given a chance like this in our lifetimes? Maybe we've been given the chance to shape our own destinies in a new land -- given second chances, for some... and chances at a new life for others.

Let's welcome what waits for us with open arms!

Third Person: (Though the setting of the sample is Luceti, I wrote it as if she hadn't yet interacted with Vash, since I'm not sure how exactly the reunion between them would go and reflects more on her personality. I hope that's okay!)

The petals of the daffodil were so smooth under her finger tips as Rem crouched in the gardens, a soft and absent smile at her lips.

This might not be the 'Eden' she had imagined herself and the Project SEEDS crew having built for mankind, but she couldn't say this wasn't an equally beautiful creation. The flowers smelled so wonderful... she had missed it, truly -- the scent of being immersed in a garden, surrounded by plant life with earth under your feet and between your toes, with fresh air around you and nothing but a massive, free expanse of sky overhead. It almost seemed too good to be true, and if it weren't for the fact that Alex was nowhere to be found in this surreal, strange wonderland of a village... she might think she had truly reached the 'heaven' she had told Vash about. She had the wings to match, after all -- didn't she?

...Vash...

Knives...

She couldn't bring herself to pluck the stem of the flower from the dirt, leaving the daffodil where it had sprouted up from the earth as she rose to her feet and hugged herself against the early morning breeze. Dark eyes had turned skyward, watching the sun beginning to crawl over the horizon in the far, far distance and wondering where the boys were now. Had they made it to their new planet? She had been forced to leave that fight on a new world all up to them... but she was sure Vash would protect the future of their dream and plant the 'seeds' she'd entrusted to him.

Maybe they're angels...

Her words to Joey echo back at her, now... and she's sure of it. She is sure that boy will do what's right, guardian angel of an oceanless world.

Vash... Take care of Knives!
