Apples and Oranges

So I just finished my second day working for an Apple reseller. Gotta tell ya, for an Apple nerd to be working in an Apple store is like an orgasm times 1000.

Its a pretty different field of retail to be working in. After five years in electrical retail selling fridges, toasters, plasma TVs and DVD players switching into a straight IT-related field is a big move. It's fascinating finding out new things about Apple products that I never knew. The biggest surprise was discovering that there is a mere 8% markup on Apple computers. Surprising, yes. A hindrance to GP margins? No. Because Apple customers have long been accustomed to paying full RRP you are making a clear 8% on each sale. What does this amount to? Basically it means you are making a nice $300 profit per sale. But don't tell anyone I told you this. I'm not sure how much Apple likes me talking about their retail operations. Pretty hush hush stuff I think.

Cool thing is, Apple staff don't simply get invoice price for goods but they get below invoice price. So, after two days working for Apple I've put in my order for a new iMac. Saving myself a pretty good wad of dough. As a bonus, we also get a reduced rental rate. I'm gonna go for that too. Boohahaaa!

So what is involved in this job? I'm working as a salesman and assistant marketing consultant to an Apple reseller. Sweet. How did I get this job? I walked into the store 14 days ago looking at the price of a Power Mac G5. I got chatting with the guy serving me, he asked what I do for a living, I said I work in retail. He asked what kind, I said electrical. He asked how much experience I had, I said just over five years. He said wait here, I waited. He came out with the manager. Three days later I went in for an interview, four days later I got a call telling me I had the job, six days later I started. Cool, huh?

Anyway. Can't be stuffed writing any more.
