...My 2005 Year-end Survey!!!

1. What did you do this year that you'd never done before?
Lived with my partner.
Visited the AFL-CIO headquarters and the Supreme Court in D.C.
Had a client.
Identified myself as “your lawyer” to my non-english speaking client.
Argued as lead-counsel (sorta) at an official hearing for my client.
Was called “counselor” by a judge while “on the record.”
“Won” the hearing.
Gained a brother-in-law.
Gave a speech in front of over a hundred people and cried. (wedding)
Related in a tent.
Started wondering where Bob Dylan had been all my life.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Yes. For all intents and purposes, I have been cigarette free for one year.
Will I make more? Keep in better touch with people. Ride my bike more.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Grandfather died. But, due to geography, we were not very close.

5. What countries did you visit?
None.

6. What would you like to have next year that you lacked last year?
A decent GPA.
Maybe a tattoo.
An impeached president.

7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory?
September 17 - My sister’s wedding day.
September 24 - Between 50-100 thousand San Franciscans marched against the war.
Although it’s not a date, when Kaity and I saw Joanna Newsom. The most emotionally charged music I’ve ever heard live. The gasps from the audience were audible.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
My hearing victory/successful representation.
My wedding speech.
Somehow, I got my girl to move in with me.

9. What was your biggest failure?
My misplaced faith in George Lucas.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I was sick for most of November and some of December. Nothing serious.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Best? I like my jean jacket. Bob Dylan records. A sewing machine. A suit.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My sister's married! Barbara Boxer.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Our president.
“Brownie.”
Jessica Simpson’s little sister.
Rolling Stone Magazine.

14. Where did most of your money go?
School.
Drinking.
Books.
Car repairs.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Episode III. (stupid)
Batman Begins (warranted)
Kayne West telling it like it is.

16. What song will always remind you of 2005?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?
Happier

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Painting/Drawing. Keeping in better touch with people I miss.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
With my family (biological and not)

21. How will you be spending New Years?
In New York. With my lady, AmeriCorps friends, and old college buddies. I leave tomorrow morning.

22. Did you fall in love this year?
Already on the floor.

23. How many one night stands?
None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
The OC. Deadliest Catch.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No

26. What was the best book you read?
The Investigation, Stanislav Lem
Everything is Illuminated, Jonathan Safran Foer

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Bob Dylan. Obscure folk/rock n’ roll/country singer.

28. What did you want and get?
My partner and I living in a single place.

29. What did you want and not get?
A decent GPA.
The Calvin and Hobbes hard back collection/box set.

30. What was your favorite movie of this year?
Grizzzzly Man.

31. What did you do on your birthday?
I honestly can’t remember.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
An impeachment hearing.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005?
Ragged, old, recycled.

34. What kept you sane?
The knowledge that I’m doing this for the right reasons (I think).

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Hmmm. I still Scarlet Johansen’s pretty foxy.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
War, lies, warrant-less searches, corruption, the minutemen, the continuing neo-con conquest…I can go all day.

37. Who did you miss?
My friends from College. My sister.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I like all the faculty at the Hastings Civil Justice Clinic. My Client.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned this year:
There's still beauty everywhere. And where possible, it's worth fighting for. And maybe my class background doesn’t have to dominate every moment of my thought process when providing legal services to a low income client.
