By the time Buffy found him and dispatched the guards, Spike was hanging from a chain attached to a ceiling. It was obvious he’d been tortured extensively regarding “The Key”, which he would not speak of no matter what happened. He’d rather be taken out into the sun and burn to ashes before he gave away any information about Dawn.
When she said that his protection of her sister would not be forgotten, Buffy kissed his cheek. But she still just turned and walked away from him, like always. He would always know the difference between her and the Bot.
