Cordelia watched her oldest friend turn away with a huff and stalk down the street, away from the Hyperion. She closed the door and leaned against it. "Well, that was one more sucky thing to deal with in a really sucky day."

Buffy's newest tag-along eyed her suspiciously. "Do all Sunnydale girls stay such good friends with their vamped pals?"

"This is different," she protested. "Harmony and I don't have a whole forbidden affair à la Buffy and Angel. We're just... Okay. We were friends back then. Sort of. But I didn't like her much better when she was still alive!"

"Unbelievable. All this time, there was a bunch of vampire fighters in town, right under our noses. Could've gotten us out of some tight spots, maybe even kept us free to take more paid jobs... They don't charge, do they? Because there's not enough business for competition."

Doyle and Oz looked at each other, unsure whether it was their cue to add to Cordelia's monologue.

It wasn't.

"Of course not, duh," she answered her own question. "We're the real thing. Hello, we've got the Slayer - okay, a Slayer. The saner one. And, really, these guys are amateurs. Who'd pay them?"

Ethan spotted a familiar figure come into the bus station, craning her neck this way and the other in her search of him. She found him easily, as Ethan had never been one to blend into crowds or - gods forbid - hide from potentially ticked off former allies.

"The beautiful Anyanka, come to bid me adieu in person," he said as soon as she came within hearing distance.

She didn't bother with niceties. "You're still a bad, bad man, and your word is worth crap," she said, ruthless as ever. "But you came through when it mattered, so... you can stay."

Buffy frowned at the number on her cell phone screen. Gunn didn't call unless it was life-or-death, and then only after he'd tried to crack the situation by himself.

"If you're still at war with the lawyers," he said, cutting to the chase, "I'd say you just won."

"What?"

"You know I've been watching Manners' home. Yesterday, lots of lawyers walked in; today the morgue squad followed."

"What?"

"Haven't been able to slip inside, but I heard a reporter say that the cellar is a real abattoir. Sounds bad to me, Summers." His voice turned sardonic. "Or is it good?"

alt BtVS 5x21 The Weight of The World

"You get the most interesting Slayers, old man," Ethan told Giles as he watched a fuming Faith herd her sister away. "The first one with her band of friends, and now this one, all fierce and loyal about a little girl. I say, it makes a chaos worshipper feel de trop."

"Faith is not that bad."

"I've been kicked from the Council longer than you, Rupert," Ethan said, "but I still remember that the Slayer is meant to protect the world first."

Giles looked thoughtful. "Perhaps the world needs a little chaos, then."

Ethan laughed incredulously. "Took you long enough."

Ethan presented Giles with one of the glasses, then sipped from the other one to show the whiskey hadn't been tampered with. "A toast to successful alliances - and the chance to escape to another dimension if all goes to hell."

Giles rolled his eyes, but drank.

"And à propos of the lovely Aud, she and I do make a good fit-" he ignored the choking sounds from the man before him "-don't you think?"

Still in the process of recovering his breath, Giles fixed him with a dooming glare.

Ethan let out a sound that closely resembled a giggle. "Thought so."
