“I’m ready,” Dawn said with resolve to the old man sitting across from her.
“Let us begin, then,” the man said. “Your move.” He gestured toward her. His deep, ominous voice sent chills up her spine.
She drew in a shaky breath as she made her move, her hand visibly trembling. She knew what was at stake. But if this could bring Buffy back… She swallowed hard and fought back tears. “This is weird,” she said, chuckling nervously.
The old man moved one of his black pawns forward. “You’ve never played a game of chess before?”
“Not with Death, no.”
