"So then, Eduardo said they used two-by-fours instead of two-by-sixes. I thought we were gonna get fired." Xander handed Anya her beer.

"But it wasn't your fault." Anya frowned "You're a very hard worker and you have a fiancée to support."

"He was just ribbing me."

Anya's eyes widened. "He can't! I'll put a curse on him. Make his hands wither-"

Xander broke in. "Kidding. Eduardo was joking, Anya."

"Oh." Anya pouted. "I thought it was one of those weird human expressions. Like where skinning and de-skinning mean the same thing."

Xander swallowed. "I'm glad you're on my side."

Willow dropped the volume on the kitchen counter.

"Who writes this stuff? This is worse than a twelfth-century spellbook!"

"Trouble?" Dawn came in from the back porch.

Willow swiped at her nose. "A bud of garlic? A rib of celery? What the heck is a rib? Is it just one piece, or the whole bunch?"

"We don't have to have soup tonight... are you crying?"

"Onions." Willow sniffled. "I can't do this. Tara always did it."

"Just add marshmallows. Everything's better with marshmallows."

Willow snorted, then reached for a tissue. "There's Doublemeat in the fridge."

Dawn shuddered. "Soup sounds great."

When Dru's hand crept beneath his belt, Spike jumped.

They were wedged into the tiny shed, waiting out the sunlight while Czech soldiers patrolled.

He didn't mind a quick shag - or several - if it would keep Drusilla quiet, but that was a big if. Dru was as likely to shriek as hold her tongue. Still, if he got her senseless she might sleep until nightfall.

Spike was pleased with himself, buckling his belt one-handed while Dru sighed into his shoulder. Then she chuckled and her fingers found his ribs. He yelped.

Sod it all. Who wanted safe and careful, anyway?
