It's interesting because to me that last line really speaks to Giles' lonliness even in the midst of all the people that he's surrounded by day after day. Excellent use of the prompt and wonderful writing throughout!

Thank you - and yes, I think he was pretty lonely a lot of the time, especially once Jenny and Joyce (and his school colleagues even) had gone. Yet he kept on returning to his duty.
